Arne Slot says that Liverpool should do better work by defending set pieces after Crystal Palace used them to bring their first defeat of the season.
Ismaila Sarr jumped on a loose ball in the six-year box to open the score after Ryan Gravenberch did not succeed in getting out of danger from a corner.
The Reds eventually found an equalizer via replacement Federico Chiesa with less than four minutes on the clock in Selhurst Park.
But it was the hosts who came overright after Super Subdie Nketiah came in at the end of a flick-on from a long complicated, who shot the ball past Alisson Becker deep in the stopping time.
Arne Slot makes Liverpool admission after the defeat of Crystal Palace
“Very difficult first half,” said Slot Sky Sports afterwards. “They really did well and deserved to be 1-0, we were lucky that it was only 1-0.
“The second half it was the opposite. It took a while before we scored and we did with a few minutes to go. But from a second set of piece they won the game.
“If you want to compete, you need a very positive balance with set pieces and even more in this competition. It was one of our biggest strengths last season, now we have admitted two against Newcastle and two here. But this competition is increasingly about set pieces.”
Finally suggested that referee Chris Kavanagh let the game play outside the assigned stop time, but admitted that Liverpool did not defend the Lange Worp well enough.
“It is never ideal if you allow in extra time of extra time. But there was a sub, so half a minute extra was reasonable. I have to check when they scored exactly, but we have to defend the slaughter better.
“We take lessons from all the games we have played and we can take even more from a game like this.”
The Dutchman was also exuberant in his praise from Palace, who remained unbeaten in the Premier League and moved to second place in the table with the victory.
“Their game style fits very well with their players,” he added. “They have a low block with fast players during the break and a big man in Mateta. We had many problems in the first half. We had the rest of the time but very difficult to beat that low block.”
