Apple has taken swift action to address an iOS bug that reportedly caused serious network issues in Australia earlier this week.
Telecom company Telstra released a support document on Wednesday explaining that a bug was “preventing some older Apple devices from connecting to our network”, including calls to emergency services, and identifying the new iOS 16.7.13 update as the likely cause. In response, Apple paused iOS 16.7.13, along with iOS 18.7.4, 15.8.6, and 12.5.8, and launched an investigation.
That investigation didn’t last long, and as Telstra explains on its updated support page, Apple has now released a network settings update to fix the problem. This only affects users of that network running iOS 16.7.13, indicating that the impact of the issue was relatively limited. Users with iOS 12, 15 and 18 can download the update without any problems.
Telstra customers who already have iOS 16.7.13 installed will not need to update iOS to get the fix. Instead, they should make sure their iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, then open the Settings app and go to General > About. A prompt should appear asking the customer to accept an update to the provider settings; tapping OK will start the installation.
To confirm that the process worked, customers must return to the General > About page and check the entry labeled Service Provider. If the update has been installed correctly, this should now be “Telstra 54.1”.
While this seems to resolve the situation, it is worth noting that iOS 16.7.13 still fails to install. It is likely that Apple will release another update soon, including the carrier settings fix.
