Fifa’s Rebranded Club World Cup started this week in the United States – but some fans were less interested in football and more bewildered by a bizarre new price name.
While the 0-0-drawing game of Inter Miami with the Egyptian side Al Ahly marked the start of the tournament, the viewers in the eagle noticed that Oscar Ustari, the experienced goalkeeper who saved a penalty and loved Lionel Messi’s side, was overputed, the ‘superior player of the match’.
The name attracted many eyebrows among fans who took social media in disbelief – not only with the uncomfortable phrasing, but what they saw as another example of football that the plot lost.
‘What the hell is a’ superior player of the game? “A fan posted. Another simply wrote: “Games disappeared, size.”
A third X user rumbled: ‘Superior Player of the Match? Your absolute sausages. Man of the competition. End of! ‘
And a fourth noticed: “Utter woke up nonsense!”
Inter Miami -goalkeeper Oscar Ustari has saved eight shots – including a penalty – against Al Ahly

Miami and Al Ahly Drew 0-0 On Saturday evening in the first game of the 2025 Club World Cup

Ustari’s reward for his remarkable performance was the ‘Superior Player of the Match’ price
Despite the protest, the term is not actually the result of a recent shift in gender language.
FIFA quietly finished ‘Man of the Match’ from his international tournaments years ago. The World Cup 2022 in Qatar used the more neutral ‘player of the match’, after a similar movement about many domestic competitions and competitions.
So where does ‘superior player’ come from? It’s all about the sponsor. The Player Award from the Club World Cup is supported by the American beer brand Michelob Ultra, whose slogan is ‘Superior Light Beer’.
The branding was also used at the Concacaf Champions Cup and Copa America – both in the US – as part of the marketing drive of the company.
Yet some fans don’t have it. ‘What the hell is’ Superior player ‘… Good Lord … FIFA ruined football,’ a fan spent on X.
Another crazy joke: ‘Is this for stupid Americans to understand? Blimey. ‘
Although many fans have affected the name of the prize, few could argue against Miami keeper Ustari as a worthy receiver.
The 38-year-old made a total of eight Saves, including one of Trezeguet’s first half, to earn a valuable clean magazine.
The next Miami match is now against Porto on Tuesday, before they meet Palmeiras four days later.
