Boxing legend Anthony Joshua has been released from hospital.

The former two-time heavyweight champion had spent days under “observation” due to minor injuries sustained in the crash, which killed two of his close friends. However, the regional governments of Lagos and Ogun states say 36-year-old Joshua was well enough last night to continue his recovery at his home in the country.

The athlete was sitting in the back of a black SUV when it hit a stationary truck on a main road near Lagos, killing his friends Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. Joshua and his mother paid their respects at a funeral home on Wednesday afternoon ahead of their repatriation to Britain, the statement said.

The post also expressed gratitude to the team of doctors and medical staff at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi who attended to Joshua and those who sustained injuries. It said: “The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable.”

The development comes after the Nigerian Police launched a search for the driver of the truck involved in the collision that injured Joshua and killed his friends.

During the search for the driver, officers managed to locate the car involved. The wrecked truck is being held at Sagamu car park and has been towed to the location, police said Daily mail. The soybean truck is registered to a company in Lagos and shows serious damage, while police tape is also clearly visible.

Joshua, born in Watford to Nigerian parents, was on holiday in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami, Florida, on December 19. He was involved in the crash but escaped with minor injuries, police said.

Police also revealed that the truck was illegally parked prior to the accident. “He was parked on the side of the highway which is illegal, he did not break down and he was not near the vehicle when the accident happened,” said a Nigerian police officer.

The search for the driver of the truck comes after the driver of Joshua’s car was also released from hospital. It is suggested he could be prosecuted for reckless driving.

“Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from hospital and he is currently making his statement,” a spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, told reporters.
