Anthony Gordon goes on the offensive against social media trolls as he speaks in Paris

Anthony Gordon was called up to media duties in Paris today in preparation for tomorrow night’s Champions League match against PSG.

The Newcastle United winger appears at the pre-match press conference with Eddie Howe.

Only Harvey Barnes has more direct goal involvement in all competitions this season (see below) than Anthony Gordon.

The former Everton winger is having a bit of an up and down season so far, which is in line with what has been happening in general team affairs.

However, Anthony Gordon has faced ridiculously exaggerated criticism from some Newcastle United fans/trolls on social media, consistently making him the scapegoat when things haven’t gone United’s way this season.

Anthony Gordon goes on the attack: “I stay off social media, it’s not for me, I don’t care about people’s opinions. Whether they love me or don’t like me, it doesn’t matter to me either way. I like to just follow my own motivation, the things that motivate me every day. For me that comes from within. Everyone works differently, some people can use social media for motivation, but that’s not my style.”

Only Mbappe and Kane have scored more Champions League goals than Anthony Gordon’s six.

In total, the winger has eight direct goals in the competition this season, two assists and six goals.

In other competitions it is only three goals and two assists so far this season.

When asked about the different returns, Anthony Gordon says: “Unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you. It’s just one of those things… I try exactly the same in all the games and always try to do the right things, they just go in, in the Champions League.”

The Newcastle United player accepts that more expectations are now being placed on him.

On how the season has gone for him so far, Anthony Gordon says: “I think sometimes perception can distort reality a little bit. I think people’s expectations of me have grown and rightly so. That’s fine with me, but I know I’m doing the right things every day. Whether I’m flying, or not playing so well, I just try to do my best. The result is sometimes a bit out of my control. I also play against right-backs who are elite themselves. So I know people expect a lot from me, but they’re quite good players themselves, they get paid decently. It’s good to stop me.”

Newcastle United plays every weekend and midweek in the four competitions.

Anthony Gordon explains the challenge for himself and his teammates: “We always try to do the right things, regardless of the competition. It’s hard to watch the competition we play in because the games are so thick and fast, we just try to do the right things. That’s what I try to do individually as well. You just give your best, that’s all we can do as a team.”

Newcastle United have qualified for the Champions League twice in three years.

Now they are one win away from automatic qualification for the last sixteen. Worst case scenario, United will be given a play-off chance to get through.

Anthony Gordon stating: “I love the Champions League, I think it brings out extra players. It’s the biggest league in the world, for me it’s the best. Every player grows up wanting to play in this league, so I’d be lying if I said it didn’t bring out some extra motivation or adrenaline. You’re facing the European champions, like us tomorrow, you’re playing against the best players, the best managers… it’s just the biggest and the best.”
