With a record of 11-8, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ season has not gotten off to an ideal start. Either way, Anthony Edwards is one reason why fans should still be optimistic about the Timberwolves. It was widely believed that the 24-year-old would make another leap, and that is exactly what he has done.
Edwards’ improvements mainly come in the form of scoring, not playmaking. He is averaging 28.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 47.7/39.7/82.3 shooting splits. While Edwards’ 28.7 points are only a slight career-high, looking at him, he seems like a much more complete scorer, and the stats back that up.
The scariest player to guard is the guy who makes jumpers when you drop off him and gets to the rim when you play him close 🤷🏽♂️ Ant Edwards is now unguarded. pic.twitter.com/9OmSHe9aUR

Anthony Edwards is rising as a goalscorer
Over the past four games, Edwards has scored at least 30 points in each of them, averaging 38.5 ppg. But beyond that, Edwards has never been a more complete scorer. Last year it was all about Edwards becoming an elite 3-point shooter, something he’s been able to maintain this year while adding some mid-range play.
Edwards is shooting 39.7 percent on 8.7 three-point attempts per game, which again puts him in the top 10 for three-point volume. Ant has been focused on improving his mid-range shooting this season. He quickly validated this by hitting a career-high 40 percent on 3.0 attempts. This jump may not sound important, but being a true three-level scorer makes it harder to guard Edwards because there isn’t a shot you feel comfortable taking.
Additionally, Edwards is shooting a career-best 71.4 percent at the rim. While his rim attempts have failed, that comes with shooting from mid-range and beyond the arc. It’s also worth noting that Edwards shoots a career-high 7.5 free throws. Ant-Man has a rare blend of explosiveness and finesse, making him a matchup nightmare.
Edwards has never been such a dominant isolation scorer. He is averaging 6.6 ISO points per game, a number that is tied with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for second in the league. In addition, his isolation frequency has increased by 6.9 percent compared to last year. Having a dominant isolation scorer who can score in bunches from anywhere on the field is a huge advantage for the Wolves, especially when the playoffs are underway.
The Timberwolves’ early season results are cause for concern, especially regarding their clutch time play. I wouldn’t panic just yet though. Having a top seven player who is getting better and better is a clear positive for Wolves. Likewise, Julius Randle is an ideal co-star alongside Ant. The Wolves also have a core that just made it to the conference finals that can’t be ignored.
I expect the Wolves to turn things around quickly, and Edwards will obviously be central to this success.
