Despite his greatness, entering his age-24 season, it was clear that Anthony Edwards still had a level to reach. One specific area of growth that was well discussed this offseason was improving as a post scorer and mid-range threat. He famously watched movies this summer and got advice from Michael Jordan.
28 games into the season, this growth is evident and has helped Edwards reach a career-high of 28.5 points per game. His improvements that he posts are the most noticeable. Last season, the Minnesota Timberwolves star shot 30.8 percent on just 0.3 post-ups per game; this season that number has risen to 55.6 percent on 1 attempt.
Becoming a more versatile scorer has made Edwards much more difficult to beat and thus helped him reach another level as a scorer.

Anthony Edwards’ post-up game helps him reach a new level
Edwards’ continued improvement is truly remarkable. It was already clear that Ant was a superstar, but last season he reached another level by suddenly becoming an elite 3-point shooter. Notably, Edwards led the league in three-point attempts and hits. He increased his volume from 6.7 attempts to 10.3 and his efficiency from 35.7 to 39.5 percent. This, combined with his already elite finishing and self-creation, helped Edwards reach another level.
Still, teams were able to force Edwards into the midrange, and his lack of a post-up game prevented him from punishing mismatches. However, that is no longer the case. If a smaller player switches to Edwards, he will immediately punish them in the post.
Honestly, the fact that Edwards set up a post-up game isn’t all that surprising; his elite athleticism and size make him perfectly suited to be an effective post-up player. However, that does not alter the fact that this development has benefited Edwards’ all-round game.
Moreover, opponents cannot leave the middle class open as they could in the past. Edwards’ mid-range and post-up scores are linked, as his post-fadeaway is his signature mid-range shot. While his jump from 3.1 attempts and 40 percent shooting isn’t as big, he’s still making an impact, and generally Ant looks more comfortable attacking from mid-range.
Of course, we have already seen the benefits of these improvements for Edwards. However, the real benefits of his growth will be realized in the playoffs. Teams will focus on stopping Ant in a play-off situation, but now he is better equipped to handle this pressure.
We’ll have to see more evidence of it, but right now it doesn’t seem like you can game plan against Edwards’ score; you just have to choose your poison. Ultimately, this could set the Wolves up for another deep playoff run, especially with the complementary scoring of Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels.
