According to Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo of MassLive.comthe Boston Red Sox have been in contact with the Diamondbacks about their second baseman. The Red Sox do one of many teams reportedly interested in bringing Marte on board.
McAdam and Cotillo noted that the talks are in a preliminary stage and nothing is imminent. However, second base is a clear need in Boston. Infielder Romy Gonzalez is currently on top of the depth map at second, but he also tops the depth charts at first and third base.
Ketel Marte would be a great first step in revamping the Red Sox lineup
Marte would be an upgrade at the keystone. He was one of the most productive second basemen in baseball over the past five years and continued that strong play into 2025. Marte posted a .283/.376/.517 batting line over his 556 plate appearances, hitting 28 home runs and 28 doubles. That was him defensively solid as well, finishing about league average in his 878 innings in second place.
The Red Sox second basemen were respectable offensively in 2025, posting a combined batting line of .252/.314/.402 with 21 home runs and 37 doubles. However, they struggled defensively, costing the Red Sox nine runs over the course of the season.
The Red Sox have already begun revamping the roster, acquiring pitcher Sonny Gray to add another top-of-the-rotation arm. Marte would be a clear upgrade in every facet, stretching out the Red Sox lineup and helping the pitching staff with its defense.
