Campero, 28, signed with the Yankees from Colombia in 2017. He was selected by the Angels in the minor league phase of the 2020 Rule 5 Draft and joined the organization for the 2021 season. Since then, he has played exclusively for the Angels for the past five years, gradually climbing the minor league ladder before reaching the majors for a quick cup of coffee in 2024. Campero has served as a backup outfielder for the Angels each of the last two seasons, hitting .202/.272/.346 in 41 games and 114 at-bats, but was undrafted by Anaheim earlier this month.
He now returns to the club on a minor league pact as a non-roster depth piece. Track the transaction that sent Taylor district to Baltimore in exchange for Grayson Rodriguezthe Angels lack a lot of security in their outfield. I Adel, Jorge SolerAnd Mike Trout It seems likely that they will split the outfield corners and DH between themselves next year, but that leaves a hole in the middle that would likely be filled by Bryce Theodosio And Kyren Paris if the season started today. An external addition seems likely, with players like Cody Bellinger And Carlo Mullins standing out as an obvious fit in free agency, but the team would likely remain thin on outfield depth even after making those types of additions.
That’s because Soler and Trout both battled injuries throughout the 2025 season and have checkered injury histories that make it difficult for either to play anywhere near 162 games next year. For his part, Adell hasn’t dealt with any significant injury issues over the years, but just enjoyed his first above-average season at wRC+ in 2025. That leaves open the possibility of regression, and increased outfield depth could help protect the Angels from both a step back from Adell and injuries to Soler and Trout.
Campero figures to be part of that depth, although the career .311/.394/.440 hitter through two seasons at Triple-A has yet to prove himself as a capable hitter at the big league level. While pieces like Campero and Teodosio are plenty of depth options, it seems prudent to expect the Angels to continue looking for additional depth to their outfield mix as the winter progresses. That could come with a particular focus on left-handed bats; Campero and Teodosio are both switch hitters, but Adell, Trout and Soler are all right-handed bats and could certainly use a left-handed addition in the outfield.
