When you look at how high golfers hit their irons at a high level, you will notice that they usually take part of the ground with them. That’s because when they hit the ball, they also touch the ground, create divots – ie compress the ball.
Taking divots is not only for the show – it serves a specific goal. When good players touch their irons, they first touch the ball and then The soil, hence the term ‘Bal-first contact’. This type of contact is essential for the standing of solid ball.
When you make the first contact, make the club in impact and also generate tons of spider. These are crucial ingredients for fresh iron shots and what allows the best players in the world to hit those high, towering approaches.
So how can you make compression yourself? GolfTec director of teaching quality Josh Troyer explains in the video below.
How to compress the golf ball
When weekend fighters try to hit their irons, they will often add loft to the clubface in an attempt to get the ball in the air. But with that they rob themselves of solid contact and cannot generate a spider.
If you want to touch it like the professionals do, you have to make compression that you can reach by concentrating on three simple tests:
1. Keep the club’s handle in the front of the ball at impact
2. Keep the shaft leaning forward, which decorates the club face
3. Clubhead descending because it influences the ball
So how can you teach yourself to do these things? Troyer proposes to start small.
“Make a backswing until the shaft is parallel to the ground,” says Troyer. ‘[Then] Move your hand more about the golf ball. This also helps to push your hips forward. And from here you just try to swing down and hit the ground in front of the ball. “
Don’t be afraid to do this exercise slowly when you start. Just concentrate on nailing those positions and feeling the sensations to let the club hit the ball and make a divot for it. As you get the hang of it, you can start making longer backspwings and adding speed. Before you know it, you make full swings and touch it like the pros.
