An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 kills at least twenty people in Afghanistan

A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif, killing at least 20 people, injuring hundreds and damaging the city’s historic Blue Mosque, authorities said, with the death toll likely to rise.
At least 20 people were killed and 643 injured, 25 of them seriously, according to preliminary figures from Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority.

Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because it lies on two active fault lines that have the potential to rupture and cause major damage.

Support promised

The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan said in a post on social media platform X that it was supporting rescue efforts on the ground.

India, which has sought to mend ties with the Taliban after cutting diplomatic ties following their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, also pledged support.

Aid group Save The Children said the latest earthquake had increased the humanitarian burden on the country, arriving just before winter, when temperatures can drop below freezing.

Blue Mosque

The earthquake damaged part of the Blue Mosque, considered one of the holiest sites in Afghanistan and believed to be the burial place of the Prophet Mohammed’s nephew and son-in-law, said Haji Zaid, spokesman for Balkh province.
