The head coach of the Australian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) team says that he spent 24 hours in an American prison when the United States immigration officials held him for a visa “wrong”.
Renato Subotic has described the test as “chaos” and claims that he was stopped at the American border on his way to coach a seminar.
“I got excited in America, ready to coach my seminar. It was supposed to be a great journey,” he wrote on Instagram.

Instead, the 33-year-old says that he was held by local officials, fascinated and taken to a federal prison.

“They brought me to prison”

Subotic said he was stopped by officials who took him to a private room and interviewed him for three hours.
“They told me there was a mistake with my visa and that they brought me to prison,” he said.
After he was stripped, searched and printed finger, Subotic says that he was being driven to a federal prison.

“No clear explanation, no chance to talk to someone, no rights.”

‘Madness’

The moment the door opened, it was chaos. Fighting between gangs. People shout. Quarreling about food, what to watch on TV, crazy people who run around. Madness.

Renato Subotic, Australian MMA Team head coach.

Subotic said he got into a fight with two other prisoners who tried to steal his blanket and leaf.
Under his first Instagram post, Subotic says that he is now back in Australia and would speak with his lawyers.
“Something has to be done about the way I was treated,” he said.

“I hope this never [happens] To no one else. “

Immigration

The story of Subotic comes in the midst of US President Donald Trump’s Hardline Immigration Crackdown and the difficulty of American border rules.
Trump recently terminated the legal status of 500,000 immigrants who moved to the US in 2022.
There are also reports of tourists who are brought to American immigration for weeks about visa issues.
The German husband Lucas Sielaff was locked up for 16 days after being accused of violating his tourist visa.
