Manchester United take on Leeds United this weekend at a time when our form and results are contrasting. While Leeds are struggling at the bottom of the table, they have drawn Liverpool twice in recent weeks, beating Chelsea 3-1 and beating Crystal Palace 4-1. In our last match we statistically failed to beat the worst Premier League team of all time, Wolves, at home.
Since returning to the top flight in 2020, Leeds have had some poor results against United and have yet to beat us. We beat them 6-2 in their first season, 5-1 and 4-2 in their second season, and on our last trip to Elland Road we won 2-0 with goals in the last ten minutes.
Before the match, manager Ruben Amorim discusses with the press what these types of matches mean for the fans.
I heard it’s a great derby and a great environment. A great rival. Every game in the Premier League is tough for us. I know it means so much to the fans, but we have to go out there and try to win.
I’ve never experienced this one unfortunately, the rivalry here is the same, just with different environments and a different culture. But the noise will be great. We just have to perform. It is difficult to compare different cultures, different bodies, different histories. Let’s focus on the game which is 11 against 11 in the beginning and we will try to win.
They have a lot of pace and sometimes we struggle with pace. They are confident, but we have proven that we can win any match in any situation and in any context. So we’re going to try that again. We know they are changing the system. They have several players in [the] front. They can, since in the last game they rotated two players who are usually the starters. So they have good players, a good manager and a great environment. It’s going to be a tough match.
