Don StevensThe old voice of the Rochester Americans and the longest regular play-by-play Omroep in the history of the American Hockey League will retire after the 2025-26 season, his 40th year at the microphone in Rochester.
Stevens is calling all 36 home games this season and selects road races to conclude an illustrious career that includes 58 years in the broadcast.
“There is something unique special about the relationship between the broadcaster of a team and his fans,” said Scott HowsonAHL President and Chief Executive Officer. “Don has provided the soundtrack for literal generations of Amerks -fans and leads them through all the indelible moments that the franchise has defined in the last 40 years. We look forward to celebrating his career this season.”
“No other person in the history of our organization has been more synonymous with Amerks hockey than Don Stevens,” said Amerks Vice President of Business Operations Chadbok. “For four decades, Don told some of the most unforgettable moments in team history, which have been immortalized by his unique and distinctive call to this day.”
Stevens, who has called more than 3,300 competitions as the primary play-by-play broadcaster of the team, has witnessed some of the most memorable moments in the almost 70-year history of the franchise. He also remains the longest-determined broadcaster in the American Hockey League after the Rochester at Rochester before the 1986-87 campaign, which serves the organization in numerous capacities, including Public Relations Director, TV gastheer and Radio Talkshowhost. Stevens has been called up for seven Calder Cup finals – including the 1987 and 1996 championships of the Amerks.
A resident of Wainwright, Alta., Stevens was admitted to the Amerks Hall of Fame in 2011 and is a dual receiver of the AHL’s James H. Ellery Award for excellent media in favor of the competition. In 2023, the Amerks in honor of him devoted the press box in the Blue Cross Arena.
