An American team, which was planning to visit India from 25 August, for the next round of negotiation for the proposed bilateral trade agreement, will probably postpone the meeting until a later date, a civil servant said.
So far, five rounds of conversations have been completed for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and an American team is planned to visit India for the sixth round of conversations.
The negotiations were planned from 25-29 August.
“This visit is likely to be moved,” said the civil servant, who did not want to be called.
Postponing or reconciling the meeting acquires the meaning because the US has announced a stunning 50 percent duty on Indian goods.
The US insisting on more market access in politically sensitive areas such as agri and dairy sector, which India cannot accept because it influences the livelihood of small and marginal farmers.
India has stated that it will not endanger the interests of farmers and animal husbandry.
The US and India have announced plans to close the first phase of BTA against the autumn (September-October) of 2025. The two countries strive for more than double the bilateral trade to $ 500 billion by 2030, from the current $ 191 billion.
Although the rate of 25 percent on Indian goods that come in from 7 August is in force, an additional 25 percent was announced on India as a fine for buying crude oil and military equipment from Russia, will take effect from 27 August.
In April-Juli exports from the country to the US increased by 21.64 percent to $ 33.53 billion, while imports increased by 12.33 percent to $ 17.41 billion, according to data from the Ministry of Trade.
The US was the largest trading partner of India in the period of April-Juli (bilateral trade of $ 12.56 billion) 2025-26. The export from India to America has recorded positive growth since April this year.
