Amazing results after Newcastle fans asked if winning the Carabao Cup would be a success

The question we asked the Newcastle United fans yesterday was: Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup, the last 16 of the Champions League, but finish halfway through the Premier League, is that a success or a failure?

We are now four months into the 2025/26 season and very mixed results.

In the Premier League there are 16 games, 6 wins, 4 draws, 6 losses.

However, the passage to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup went smoothly for the fourth season in a row. Spurs were defeated in the final round and Newcastle United were taken to a home game with Fulham in the last eight on Wednesday.

Of course we also have the welcome distraction of the Champions League, Eddie Howe and his team have picked up ten points in six games so far, putting them in a great position to at least reach the play-offs for the last sixteen knockout stages.

So the complete picture this season so far, in all competitions:

Played 24 Won 11 Draw 5 Lost 8

If it is like this at the end of the 2025/26 season: Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup, reach the last 16 of the Champions League, but finish halfway through the Premier League. Would that be a successful season, or a failure?

The votes have now been counted and the results are:

40% say it would be a failure

60% say this would be a success

I have to say I find this quite amazing.

Not that the majority (60%) of Newcastle United fans who voted thought these outcomes would mark success.

Instead, the fact is that two in five (40%) of Newcastle United voters think that winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League, but finishing mid-table in the Premier League, would be a season of failure!
