Midfield will be firmly at the top of INEOS’ agenda as Manchester United prepare to strengthen their squad this summer.
Over the past seven years, the Red Devils have signed just two central midfielders, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, a disappointing record that underlines the neglect of the center of the pitch.
United cannot afford to ignore the urgent need to inject more quality into the engine room, which is clearly not at the required level.
Fortunately, there are already clear signs that United are making smart moves to bring some of the best midfielders to M16.
Back for Onana
One of those midfielders who could make the switch is Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana.
The Belgian, who recently hinted that he would like to join a “world-class club”, is firmly back on United’s radar.
Two years after missing out on his services, opting for Villa instead, United believe it is time to move him away from the West Midlands.
Football insiderPete O’Rourke reports:
“United’s long-term interest, dating back to his time at Everton, could see them make another move for the midfielder if they miss out on other key targets.”
Onana not cheap
Even though Onana is seen as a brilliant option, he won’t be cheap. O’Rourke admits:
“However, it may be difficult to land Onana as he joined Aston Villa for £50m in 2024 and they will look to make a profit from his sale.”
Villa, currently third in the Premier League, have seen Onana develop into a vital cog in their system, and his performances have received so much praise.
The perfect heir to Casemiro
For Villa, Onana has been instrumental in breaking up play with his ruthless tackles, interceptions and recoveries. But that’s not all: he has also contributed with his aerial dominance in the opposition frame, scoring crucial goals. These qualities make him the ideal heir to Casemiro, who will leave Manchester this summer.
Onana is perhaps the most physically imposing midfielder in the Premier League at the moment and could provide the strength and steel United so desperately crave. His arrival would take this United side significantly to the next level, making them not only stronger, but also much more intimidating to their rivals.
