Are you intrigued by the idea of a foot -shaped Teenbox? But not so much because of the idea of a zero drop shoe? Altra has heard the feedback and made a pair of new 4 mm heel drop shoes. De Wild 2 is the second iteration and we think that an improvement compared to a good thing.
The Altra Experience Wild 2 is the second generation of a comfortable, versatile trail shoe that serves as a good transition for runners interested in a zero drop model without taking the full dive. It is comfortable and protective for your feet while still offering the Altra-Class foot-shaped toebox.
There was no change in the midsole or the outsole, so if you like the original, then version 2 will simply have some updates for a better fit and a lower price!
Is this a trail shoe that you have to add to your rotation? Keep reading to find out.
- Wide feet: Although this model does not offer wide sizes, Altra is a great option for runners with wide feet. The foot -shaped toebox provides a wide fit that often ends with black toenails.
- Technical paths: Good grip and traction, as we see with most altra trail shoes.
- Long runs: These shoes are designed to go for a long time.
- Front of the package: These are lightweight and protective, which is why some Altra elites raced in it!
This is a really versatile model that should match many different runners, from those jogging on fire roads to those who really go for it in the ultrar room.
Altra Experience Wild 2 Overview
The Altra experience Wild 2 Striks that perfect balance between lightweight and pillows. I felt supported on different trail conditions, while at every step I still felt the ground under my feet.
This helped me to feel more confidently by navigating super Rocky trails-I am queen of the near-trip and I stumbled less than normal (I am still still!).
Something I really appreciate in a trail shoe is the gripping of the steps- the Altra experience Wild 2 has really delivered in this respect.
You can feel the “stickiness” of the shoes on rock and sand, and when I tested it on a very steep downhill, I felt confidently on the flight.
From the box this is a really attractive and comfortable shoe. It has solid steps and you can see that it will perform well on different trail conditions. But to ensure that the appearance does not deceive, I naturally had to see myself.
I took this out for trail runs ranging from 4 to 13 miles, in different trail conditions. I tested this on technical rocky paths and a few road-trail routes.
The shoe exceeded my expectations and I noticed that I was reaching them on almost every run that I went in recent weeks! I even grabbed this for a few short walks with my dogs – they also approved.
I think it’s great that Altra has been expanding in recent years 4 mm Low drop running shoe model. This offers an easy transition for those who have never switched to zero drops.
The first version of the Altra Experience Wild was very nice, and this version keeps everything that was successful with some great add-ons.
The Altra experience Wild 2 Has a new integrated D-ring for stream-omzoomed Gaiter attachment and extra-laying eyeet for increased security on those technical paths, making this shoe a great candidate for your entire day of adventures.

Altra Experience Wild 2 Fit
My favorite thing about Other models Is their foot -shaped toebox. If you’ve never seen it before, it looks a bit clown-y, but once you’ve tried them, you start to wonder why all shoes were not made like that!
If you’ve ever had problems Black toenails (Ask the poor soul with my local nail salon when I experience this – spoiler alert, I do) This can be a great option for you.
Your toes contain a lot of space in this, and the extra lace eye in the updated version of this model ensures that your foot feels very safe.
I didn’t notice rubbing on the tongue or heel – all in all these are a great safe fit.
If you are new in a model with a lower drop, you may notice that you work Achilles or the soles of your feet a little harder than normal-that is because your feet move in a different way than they are used to.
Although it is not the same as going to a zero drop, especially if you are run in Hokas 5 mm, you will notice some pain if you were previously in a 12 mm. Those ankles and calves work a little more is not a bad thing at all.
Remember that if you make that big drop of convenience with a few short runs to see how your legs feel.
Similar shoes with the altra wild 2
- Hoka Speedgoat – these had a similar level of support if the speedgoats with a lower drop
- Altra Lone Peak -This feel pretty lonely in the feeling in terms of gripiness and comfort, but with that 4 mm drop instead of zero
- Topo -twist -Topo is another a foot -shaped toebox option. This model has a similar level of damping – not Max, but comfortable.
Who tried?
Kim started running after he decided to run her first half marathon because it landed on her birthday. Then she said those famous last words: “I will never run a marathon!” Since then she has tackled many marathons and ultramarathons up to 50 miles. She likes Ultra Distance Trail that runs the best and is always looking for the next challenge. Her favorite trail-fuel is potatoes and Coca-Cola, and her favorite way to recover is on the couch with her two dogs.
