Bernard Tomic will make a rare main tour appearance when he takes on Corentin Moutet in the first round of the Almaty Open on Monday. In fact, Newport is the only ATP main draw the 32-year-old has played in this season.
Tomic, ranked 168, did well to qualify in Almaty, beating both Denis Yevseyev and Marc-Andrea Huesler in three sets, the latter 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(6) on Sunday.
For Tomic, an in-form opponent at 38th is a steep step up in the competition. Moutet has been playing well since the start of the hard-court summer and his Asian swing included a semi-final appearance in Hangzhou. The French left-hander should move up without too many problems.
