I also collaborated with a colleague fan of Edinburgh who has his finger on the wrist of contracts, rumors and the English game, so we will present a few names that can fill the gaps that have been left by one of those teachers.
We have not proposed anyone who is not SQ, because in this S6 era De SRU has soon made it clear that the exception must be and a real number will be imposed in due course. The non -SQ quotum of Edinburgh looks like no more than 4 for the coming season, depending on some movements that may or may not be done.
It is also worth noting that Bill Mata leaves and Blair Kinghorn has already gone, a fair piece of wages has been saved. It is clear that we have no idea how the Budeget is managed, but you would like to think that part of it will be made available for new recruits.
This year we have two lists. A true, thanks to an inexplicable but welcome change in the policy, we know the exact length of a player contract and the other where the players last signed for that change and we guess a bit when it comes to assessing whether they may leave or not.
Loshead. Schoey brings a lot of time away with Scotland and has a very competent deputy in Boan Venter, but Boan will be SQ by Residentie next year and I see him being brought into the Scottish shot. Robin Hislop leaves that behind and all three of these above players are in the middle of contracts. The only one who probably has no contract is that Mikey Jones probably signed the typical one year of First Pro Contract Deal before the start of this season. I don’t see him leave. Leave – nobody
Possible replacement – Not required
Whore. Adam McBurney signed an extension of his contract in 2022 that will bring him to the end of this season. He seems to be fit of videos and pre -matchwarm -ups that I have seen, but is not visible so far. Cherry, Ashman and Harrison are probably enough in the future, so I would be surprised if he still gets a deal. Departure – Adam McBurney
Possible replacement – Jerry Blyth-Rafferty is in the academy and with 3 senior whores and only 1, sorry Dave, who seems to want Scotland, so that can be enough.
Tighthead. All our tightheads are out of the contract at the end of the season with the exception of Javan Sebastian. I think it’s time for WP to hang its boots. I was told that De Bruin goes away and may go back to Leicester. I am sorry to say that I don’t think Williams is good enough for this level that Darcy Rae leaves. He can get a new deal because this is a thin area. Abandoned – Luan de Bruin, Angus Williams. WP Nel
Possible replacement. Will Hurd at Leicester Tigers, Rhys Lestick in Cardiff, Fin Richardson in Exeter are all possibilities.
2nd row. Jamie Campbell is the only one in this area that absolutely needs a new contract. He has 1 performance for the club in 2022 and he turns 23 in May. It does not predict well for his future.
Marshall Sykes, Jamie Hodgson and Glen Young’s contracts are all in the uncertain category. Sykes and Hodgson were last announced as bound for the ‘Forseable Future’ in December 2021. Young was announced as a contract extension in June 2022, but no actual period was given. So all three may be an extension that you would expect to happen. We have also signed the gigantic Rob Carmichael. Leave – Jamie Campbell
Possible replacement. Alex Craig reported to Scarlets for this season, but no expensive was given for that contract. He did well against a difficult background and would be a solid acquisition.
Wing forward. Hamish Watson announced during a live show from Good, Bad and Rugby Podcast that he no longer had a contract this year. His prospects on Scotland are declining, despite a strong return to form and fitness, so he can decide that this is the time for a last payment day in France or Japan. I even heard that he can be Bristol Bound, just like Big Bill.
There is also a possibility that Luke Crosbie is without a contract at the end of the season, because his last deal was announced in 2021 and was described as ‘long term’. That can be 3 years or maybe longer. I don’t see him leave at this stage. Departure – Hamish Watson
Possible replacement. We should not look too far with both Freddie Douglas and Liam McConnell that impress the U20s
No. 8. As we know, Bill Mata is on his way to Bristol for season 24-25 and is all our best wishes. He gave endlessly in his time in Edinburgh. Departure – Bill Mata
Possible replacement. The rumor mill is quite clear that Magnus Bradbury might make the opposite trip to Bill. Josh Bayliss is also an option here.
Scrum half. Scott Steele was signed for a 1 -year -old deal and it starts to look as if he will leave without playing a single match for Edinburgh. Charlie Shiel received an extension of 1 year at the end of last year. I can’t see that it will be renewed. Ali Price is also for a loan agreement that ends at the end of the season and I think that will be a permanent step.
The last deal that Ben Vellacott signed was announced in December 2022 and was apparently ‘multi -year’. I would say that it must be at least 3 years, but it is still guesswork. LEaving -Cott Steele and Charlie Shiel
Possible replacement. If we have Vellacott and Price, I would give Hector Paterson a step. Charlie Chapman in Gloucester is also an option.
Stand off. Cammy Scott is no longer a contract, but I think that will be renewed. Savala is in contract until 2026 (thanks Mike Blair), but I don’t think Sean Everitt will judge him, so that can be a dilemma. Depart – Charlie Savala
Possible replacement. Then Lancaster at Ealing is a decent scream. He is SQ by his grandmother.
Center. Most of our centers are well in their deals – Bennett 2025, long 2026, Dean 2025, only Matt Currie is possible from a contract after he signed his first pro contract in January 2022. It is generally accepted that these are usually 1 year deals. He gets a new deal. Leave – nobody
Potential replacement. The center seems to be our weakest area at some distance and it would be good to see some forward planning here. Rory Hutchison would be a welcome addition. Robin McClintock at Biarritz can also be an option. In the past week, rumors have surfaced that Matt Scott can be a target to return to his hometown club.

Wing. Jake Henry and Harry Patterson are both without a contract, but you should say that their career is going in opposing directions. Patterson gets a new deal. Henry I’m not sure.
There is a possibility that Darcy Graham’s contract can also be extended. His last deal was announced in May 2021 and it was said that he is several years, so decipher it. It can mean 4 years, but at least I think he will be for a while. Wes Goosen can no longer have a contract. He joined the club prior to the 22/23 season and I would take a point that was a 2 -year -old deal with it. I hope he will get and accepts an extension. Leave – Jake Henry

Potential replacement – Ruaridh McConnochie is perhaps 32, but we are regularly without Darcy, Duhan and increasingly Harry Paterson, so he would get a lot of gametime, so a decent option in the short term can be.
Fullback. Only Nathan Sweney is without a contract in this position. I think he will be retained. Depart – Nobody.
Possible replacement. Cameron Anderson at Wasps.
There you have it. Some guesswork, some that can even be trained, some facts and the strange rumor that has reached me. We will see soon enough how close I am.
Correction – Darcy Graham drew a new 3 -year -old deal on 25/12/23 – He will not go anywhere soon!
