UFC legend Demetrious Johnson has given his thoughts on Alexandre Pantoja’s unfortunate injury at UFC 323.
During the co-main event of UFC 323, Alexandre Pantoja suffered a nasty arm injury that prevented him from continuing. It happened during the opening bouts of the fight and as a result of what happened, Joshua Van was declared the new UFC flyweight champion.
We all expect Alexandre Pantoja to recover and be back to his best at 125 pounds. Of course, there’s no guarantee he’ll be able to recapture Joshua Van’s throne, but we can hope he gets close enough to 100% that we can see the kind of fight we’ve all been waiting for – aka a complete stunner.
In a recent video on his channel, Demetrious Johnson responded to what happened to Alexandre Pantoja.
Demetrious Johnson’s take on Alexandre Pantoja’s injury
“That’s part of the game, guys,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to go on and do it again and again, again and again, again and again. It’s a sport where anything can happen.”
“I really felt like Alex Pantoja could break my 11 straight title defenses,” Johnson said. “Even though he was only five – he still had six or seven to go – I didn’t see anyone on the rise who would give him a challenge. Granted, Alex Pantoja is 35 years old, and now that he’s lost the belt, the clock starts all over again, baby! [Smiling]”
“All I have to say is, if you think about being consistent in MMA, whether I was ahead of my time, or just so damn good, or if everyone was just bad, like you guys said, showing up 11 times in a row, making weight, passing every drug test, being dominant and getting better, throwing the Mighty Whizbar, and the flying knee, and all that stuff, it just shows you how hard it is to do,” Johnson said.

Will they be able to run it again later this year? We’ll have to wait and see.
