UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has given his thoughts on being booked to defend his title against Diego Lopes at UFC 325, the same man he defeated when he won the belt in April.
Last night, Dana White shocked the mixed martial arts world by revealing that Diego Lopes would get a shot at Alexander Volkanovski’s world title, less than a year after ‘The Great’ defeated him quite convincingly. Considering that Lerone Murphy and Movsar Evloev are both on the verge of a championship opportunity, many fans and pundits felt quite confused by this decision.
Of course, we all know that Alexander Volkanovski is the kind of man who will fight just about anyone put in front of him. But considering he’ll be almost a year older by the time this match starts, you have to wonder if this is the fight he really wants.
In a recent video on his channel, Alexander Volkanovski gave his own opinion on this booking move by the UFC.
Alexander Volkanovski’s take on Diego Lopes’ rematch
“I obviously wanted to fight a little earlier,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. “I thought it was going to be December. We thought Lerone Murphy was December, and I think the UFC was waiting for Jean Silva and Lopes. Then they said Lopes, and of course we said, ‘We just fought that guy. Are there other people who deserve it or not?’ Everyone knows I will fight anyone.”
“UFC really wanted Lopes, but at least everyone knows they’re in for a treat,” Volkanovski added. ‘It will be a very exciting fight. They earn more with Movsar and Lerone, but will they compete like Lopes would? I think the fans will appreciate the fight that me and Lopes will have.

Lerone Murphy is clearly not very happy with this decision, but to his credit he has chosen to dust himself off and prepare for whatever challenge the UFC throws at him next.
