Perseverance was finally rewarded for Alex de Minaur on Sunday at the ABN Amro Open.

The top-seeded Australian fittingly delivered his sharpest performance of the week to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-2 to secure his first indoor title at the ATP 500 event. De Minaur fell in the past two Rotterdam finals, but he was clear and clinical on all fronts against Auger-Aliassime, who needed an off-court medical timeout midway through the second set.

“That’s what it’s all about: just doing my best to rise to the occasion,” De Minaur said of his latest outing, in which he didn’t face a breaking point, according to Infosys ATP Stats. “As the tournament goes on, you try to find solutions and give yourself the best chance to play better the next day, and that’s exactly what I did. I’m super happy with today’s performance.

“Third time lucky… I’m super excited, super happy. It ended up being a great week here in Rotterdam. It’s a place where I always feel very good. In previous years I was just one step short, so it feels great to finally be able to take the title.”

Auger-Aliassime was on an eight-match winning streak after winning the title in Montpellier last week. The Canadian was aiming for a ninth career indoor title to further cement his reputation as one of the most dangerous players under one roof. However, De Minaur has been a consistent force at ATP 500 level in recent years and his title victory in the Rotterdam final proved too much for the Canadian.

“Congratulations to Alex and your team,” Auger-Aliassime said during the trophy presentation. “We’ve played a lot of games over the years… I did my best today, but you were just a little too good. [It’s your] third time in the final here, so congratulations on the win.”

After a cagey start between the tournament’s two best players, the final ignited in the sixth game of the opening set as De Minaur hit two inspired winners to earn the decisive break – the first time Auger-Aliassime’s serve had been broken since his second-round victory over Stan Wawrinka in Montpellier.

De Minaur continued his momentum in the second set and broke again in the fifth game, stepping inside the baseline and dictating rallies with increased aggression. Shortly afterwards, Auger-Aliassime left the court for medical treatment and returned lacking his usual explosiveness. De Minaur sensed his opportunity and remained ruthless. He closed out the match and reduced his Lexus ATP Head2Head deficit against the Canadian to 2-3.

With his victory in 78 minutes, De Minaur also jumped two places to number 6 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
