Toledo, oh – it is with mixed emotions that De Walleye Toledo announces the departure of assistant coach Alden Hirschfeld. Hirschfeld leaves the organization after six seasons behind the bank to follow new opportunities outside of Hockey
I want to thank Toledo and the fans enormously for supporting me in my hockey career, “said Hirschfeld.” Starting as a player for five years and then seven years old are part of the coaching staff, Toledo Walleye Hockey has been a large part of my story. What a privilege it was to be part of my hometown team for so long where my wife and I were able to raise our children around family. I do not naturally assume that this is rare in the hockey world.
To the coaches and players, thank you for making my work easy. I could not have asked for a better group of boys to be with every day. You would never be enough for the fans. You always have and will always be the best fans in the competition. Excited to be part of this group and to be the largest zander fan that is there.
Hirschfeld joined the Walleye Coaching Staff in 2018 in 2018 after six seasons in the Echl and AHL. Hirschfeld divided his first professional season between South Carolina van de Echl and Providence of the AHL before he came to the Walleye Toledo for the 2013-14 campaign. He spent the following three seasons splitting the time between Toledo and Grand Rapids before playing his last two seasons as the Sander Captain. In 200 career competitions at The Walleye, Hirschfeld scored 59 goals with 94 assists. He also scored 3 goals with 5 assists in 26 Playoff matches with Toledo. He graduated from the Northview High School in Sylvania and was named Mr. Hockey Ohio. He played four seasons for Miami University, including his first year in an NCAA title.
“I am grateful to Alden for its dedication and leadership, both in the two years that we have worked together and the years before I arrived,” said Walleye head coach Pat Mikesch. “He has been a fantastic coach and mentor for our players and an integral part of shaping the culture of the Walleye Toledo.”
According to Walleye President and CEO Joe Napoli: “Alden Hirschfeld is much more than a coach. He is an example of what we can hope that all young men will be. He is the perfect professional – hardworking, smart, carefully and friendly. We will miss him.”
