Top ranked Carlos Alcaraz defeated No. 5 Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the Japan Open Final on Tuesday (September 30, 2025) for his eighth singles title this year.
It could also be a few weeks of Alcaraz, because he later announced that he will skip the Shanghai Masters that will open on Wednesday.
“I had difficulty with some physical issues and after discussing with my team we believe that the best decision is to rest and restore,” wrote Alcaraz in an Instagram message.
He injured a single in the first round but overcame that and only dropped one set in Tokyo.
The 24th career -Singles title of Alcaraz was granted with an agile, cut drop shot winner and last week turned a loss in two sets to Fritz during the Laver Cup Team event.
The Spaniard also improved his seasonal record to a Tour-Beste 67-7 when he remained on course for the seasonal number 1 ranking.
“It has been my best season so far,” said Alcaraz. “That shows how hard I have worked to experience these moments and achieve my goals.”
The final in Tokyo was a ninth upright for Alcaraz since March when he lost to the Miami Masters in the round of 64. He is 7-2 in that final, one of them in Wimbledon to Jannik Sinner.
“I did not start so well with the year, that struggled emotionally,” recognized Alcaraz, “so how I came back, I am just very proud of myself, and of all the people around me who helped me to be in this position.”
Fritz took a medical time -out after the first set for treatment on his left thigh that was tied during a switch in the second set.
