Alabama Athletic Commission concludes illegal fighting event in Cherokee County; Promoters are confronted with serious penalties
Cedar Bluff, Ala. – Promoters of an illegal combat sport event are confronted in prison for decades and hundreds of thousands of dollars after an event called “The Pit” was closed by the Alabama Athletic Commission (AAC).
The event took place on 27 September near Weiss Lake and was put into a joint operation led by the Alabama Athletic Commission and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.
Chief Inspector of the AAC Shane Sears that lead the Task Force that closed the illegal operation, said that the AAC was acting on a tip about the event without a permit, which was promoted online.
“I can’t emphasize enough how dangerous these events are. Everyone who is aware of illegal activities is encouraged to call our office,” said Sears.
A Sheriff’s Drone and Live Social Media Feeds department confirmed that the fighting had begun before delegates and committee officers had been withdrawn. It was established that minors were also present during the event.
Signs for “The Pit” stood along the unpaved road to the site, where visitors paid admission and private security in “Pit Staff” shirts, the crowd followed.
Promoters Samuel Weaver and Javin Newsome were identified as organizers. Neither of the men had the required licenses and permits of the AAC, which, according to the law, regulates all combat sports in Alabama, including boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts and other unarmed combat sports. The Statten Act comprises fines of a maximum of $ 10,000 per violation of AAC rules and regulations.
Proof of the operation – including photos, a fighting card and video OFS – were transferred to assistant – Procurer -General Matt Bedsoe. Officials said the case remains in investigation and can expand with accusations of illegal gambling, racketeering, kidnapping and children’s threat.
If convicted, fines can go up to tens of years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.
Also participated in the joint operation Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, Chief Deputy Josh Summerford, Sgt. Thomas Key and District Attorney Summer Summerford.
The crowd spread quickly as soon as the closure was announced and no injuries were reported.
