When Al Horford opted to leave the Boston Celtics for the Golden State Warriors during the offseason, the expectation was that he would be leaving a team entering a transition year to join a stronger title contender.

However, early results have turned that story around, as the two teams’ performances differed from preseason assumptions, and Horford needed time to fully adapt to Golden State’s system, reports Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.

“I think the difference is the different places you look for different things,” Horford said.

“So in Boston we did a lot of pick-and-rolls, and then some isolations, and then we had to move the ball. And here with the Warriors, we try to get the ball to Draymond (Green), or get the ball in the post, and then play more on the perimeter, play splits and get to the basket and things like that.

“And then when Steph is on the field, it’s obviously all connected. So there’s some pick-and-roll, but then there’s a lot of movement off the ball.”

Horford has played 19 seasons for 5 teams, including the Hawks and Celtics. He averaged 12.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 1,176 regular season games.

He was selected to play in five All-Star games and has won one NBA championship.
