Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir face South Africa’s BCCI Heat Following Series Whitewash

India’s struggles in Test cricket at home have left Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir in a difficult situation. After the 0-2 defeat to South Africa, questions are growing within the BCCI about India’s planning, selection and overall preparation.

This setback comes shortly after New Zealand defeated India at home in 2024. It has raised alarms about the way the team is building its red ball core and whether the current system is missing basic issues.

Officials say both Agarkar and Gambhir will be asked to explain what went wrong. They want clarity about how the selections were made and why India cannot deal with the familiar circumstances.

Selectors under scrutiny

Agarkar’s jury has been heavily criticized for not watching enough domestic cricket. Many believe there is now a big divide between selectors and red ball performers struggling through the Ranji season.

Agarkar has spent much of the past year traveling with the national team through Australia and England. But he has hardly attended any Ranji matches since the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka match in 2024. That match was followed by Devdutt Padikkal’s Test debut, which raised eyebrows about how quickly players get promoted.

Fans and former players feel that the selectors are leaning towards names with modest first-class numbers. Players like Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy are often picked ahead of consistent hitters like Sarfaraz Khan, Karun Nair and Abhimanyu Easwaran.

A BCCI official pointed out this growing problem. He said: “We will also talk to the selectors about the Test debacle. As far as watching domestic matches is concerned, every score will be on the app.” The comment has sparked debate over whether selectors rely too much on digital updates instead of watching games live.

India’s domestic form is declining

India have now lost five of their last seven Tests at home. South Africa showed loose batting, slow thinking in the field and a lack of patience on pitches that did not misbehave much.

Experts say the team can no longer hide behind excuses. They believe that this defeat should be regarded as a wake-up call. India needs clearer long-term plans, a stronger domestic pipeline and more responsibility in red-ball cricket.
