AI-driven oral Cancer Clinic opened in Hong Kong

The Prince Philip Dental Hospital in Hong Kong has opened a new AI-driven clinic that focuses on the prevention and early detection of oral cancer.

The clinic was founded with the Division of Orale and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Faculty of Diendts of the University of Hong Kong.

Recommended as a first of its kind in the world, The clinic is equipped with a web tool called Oralcancerpredict developed by HKU, which has demonstrated an average accuracy of 94% in detecting patients with a high risk of oral cancer.

The device support device uses multiple information, including the patient’s demography, comorbidities, clinical appearance and histological characteristics, to calculate the probability of oral leukoplakia and oral lichen -mosoid cases (which are usual potentially malignant mouth ruin) that are changed in cancer. It also offers risk classifications and the reasoning behind them.

Developed in 2021, tThe technology is based on an AI model that was trained with the help of a large cohort of patients in the Queen Mary Hospital between 2003 and 2022. It was later validated against data sets of large cohorts in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Why it matters

With reference to worldwide data, HKU said that only half of the patients with oral cancer survive five years after a diagnosis. In Hong Kong this represents six out of 10 patients, and this is due to late diagnosis.

“As a result, it is a need to intensify efforts and public action to promote city -wide oral cancer prevention and early detection,” the university emphasized.

The new PPDH clinic is open to referred patients with oral leukoplakia and oral lichen -mosoid lesions. It also offers treatment and periodic follow-up.

The larger trend

Over the years, HKU has promoted the development and use of AI in detecting oral diseases, in particular gingivitis or gum disease. The Faculty of Dentistry was involved in building a AI model for detecting gingivitis, which has demonstrated more than 90% accuracy in a study issued in 2023. Last year it launched a community -based program for screening of gum inflammation among the elderly with the help of AI.
