AHF: Kenyan teams achieve big results in Egypt as the Africa Cup of Nations heats up

The Kenyan men’s and women’s national hockey teams put in impressive performances at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Ismailia, Egypt on Wednesday.

The men’s team bounced back from previous defeats to record their first win of the tournament, coming from a goal down, leaving Nigeria 2–1 down, while the women’s team held defending champions South Africa to a hard-fought goalless draw.

Men’s team: Kenya fights back against Nigeria

Nigeria took the lead in the fourth minute John Peterwho fired a field goal past the Kenyan goalkeeper Caleb Omondi. However, Kenya responded strongly and equalized in the 15th minute Mahias are Oywatakawho converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag movement.

The winning goal came in the 43rd minute, when Alex Taiswa fired home from open play to secure the comeback win for Kenya – their first in the competition. Before the match against Nigeria, Kenya had had a difficult start to the tournament.

Women’s team: Kenya has defending champions

In the women’s category, Kenya showed remarkable defensive organization and composure to hold South Africa to a 0-0 draw, a result that keeps their title hopes alive. Earlier in the tournament, the Kenyan ladies got off to a strong start, beating Nigeria 1-0 in their opening match thanks to a solitary goal from Alice Owiti.

With three games played, Kenya are second in the table with seven points, level with South Africa, but trailing only on goal difference – the South Africans lead with six goals.
