Farmingdale, ny-nae got out of hand on Saturday on the 45th Ryder Cup-Toen Jingoic, Micha-driven Tryhards and even the official 1st-Tee Emcee of the Rory Mcilroy event and other members of the European team in their personal punch bags of the Singles of Sunday.
Part of it was perhaps due to the energy-ended warmth on a warm, mostly silent afternoon at Bethpage Black when the temperature crawled into the 80s in the 80s, but most of them was due to the beautiful seven-point lead that Europe had opened in foursomes and Four-Ball Play, which had the same effect on this event that would be a pinprick on a ballon.
Yet the fat lady did not sing yet, even if supporters were of the blue-and-gold. On Sunday, McIlroy landed in the tent, in the fourth of 12 singles matches against Scottie Scheffler. World No. 1 (that would be Scheffler) vs. World No. 2. Four Majors versus five. Future Hall of Famer vs. Future Hall of Famer. Dream items, even against the background of what was a European routes. Fans who needed help to be embarrassed on the 1st tee (most not) were helped by the heart -punchy national anthem of the murderers’ Mr. Brightside ‘, which flourished through speakers while McIlroy and Scheffler prepared to touch their opening.
McIlroy took the early lead with a birdie on the 2nd and was still 1-up after the players had hit their T-shirt balls at the Par-4 4th. When McIlroy left the Tee box, European fans who flanked the right rope line began to rule him with the well -known melody of the ‘Zombie’ of the cranberries, but with tailor -made texts on McIlroy. “He is in your HEMAAAD / he is in your Heaaad / Roaaar-Uh-Ee, Roaaar-Uh-Ee …”
When the song – a popular on real estate this week – Peted Out, one of the partygoers shouted: “Rory, we have your back!”
On the other side of the Fairway, within the rope line, McIlroy’s manager, Sean O’Flaherty, ran with a few acquaintances.
One of them with an Irish accent said joke: “Did you pay them to say that, Sean?”
O’flaerty laughed and said, “Ah, it’s brilliant.”
The exchange contradicted The deeply stressful week McIlroy had here at Bethpage Black. Ryder Cups are never easy in the road team and especially on the stars of the road team but the amount of abuse that McIlroy has endured was not only regrettable, it was downright repulsive. “F— You, Rory!” Was a normal shot. Other fans took photos of his big heartache, his length and even his wife; Shane Lowry said that the Vitriol Erica McIlroy was ‘amazing’.
McIlroy ignored a lot of the bars, but not all, sometimes staring at Hecklers, who tells them to keep your mouth shut or to let them out of the building, as he did with one perpetrator on the 10th Hole Sunday. “This should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup,” said Mcilroy on Sunday evening. “We will ensure that we say to our fans in Ireland in 2027 in 2027 that what happened here this week is not acceptable. I think if I was an American, I would be irritated that people – I didn’t hear much screaming today, but I heard a lot of screaming against me.”
Every game drew a crowd on Sunday, but the Clash-Scheffler collision of the McLroy-Scheffer was the main event. After the campaign from the ropes, a tournament-inside-a-Tournament swarm of team representatives, family members, reporters and even a few celebrities SNL Cast members Colin Jost and Marcello Hernández, who had served earlier in the week as part of the TV reporting of NBC; Comedian Nate Bartagze also made a short cameo. On the 6th hole, Jost and European Captain Luke Donald’s wife Diane discussed the awesome game of Justin Rose in his four-ball match in his Saturday. “You just never know who’s going,” said Diane, who saw her husband Captain Two Ryder Cup teams and plays four more.
As the competition progressed, it did. When McIlroy a short putt on 7-size on 7, a Ventilator McIlroy reminded of an equally short putt he had missed on the 72nd hole on the US Open in Pinehurst 2024. In the next hole, a par-3 set in a natural amphitheater, a fan “f-jij, Rory!” While McIlroy ran over the green. McIlroy’s father, Gerry, who was greenside, could only shake his head. While Rory’s Lange Birdie tried to shoot past the hole, someone shouted, “Go into the water!”

McIlroy didn’t have His best stuff (nor Scheffler), but he was not about to capitulate the fans with an error. The entire week he had found a way to fight through the resistance. On Friday morning he and Tommy Fleetwood worked together for five Birdies and Waxten Collin Morikawa and Harris English, 5 and 4. That afternoon, in Four-Ball, he and Shane Lowry half a point against Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay. In Saturday Foursomes he and Fleetwood had a rematch with their Friday opponents and collected another point. On Friday afternoon, McIlroy joined four-ball and they defeated Justin Thomas and the hottest player of the US, Cameron Young, 2 up.
Four games for McIlroy, 3.5 points, which have raised his all-time points in total to 21.5, one point more than the migration of José María Olazábal and within half a point of Nick Faldo and one point of Seve Ballesteros. These names mean something for McIlroy. Much more than something, actually. This event also puts its place in his heart that apparently grows with every passing edition.
“We are talking about all the people who came before us who have ffitted our way for us,” said Luke Donald on Sunday evening in the aftermath of the 15-13 victory of Europe. “Now future generations will talk about this team tonight and what they were doing and how they were able to overcome one of the most difficult environments in the entire sport. And that is inspiring for me, and that is what Rory gets and all these other 11 boys.”
While Donald spoke, McIlroy blinked the tears and rubbed his eyes. He was emotional, grateful and exhausted.
That fatigue showed Sunday in a competition that McIlroy called ‘a pillow fight’. However, it did not sound like a pillow fight. While McIlroy and Scheffler cross the road that breaks the Black Course to play the last four holes, the heavy crowds, bundled by the thousands, lay out scenes from Woodstock, minus the peace and love. On the tee at 18, where McIlroy 1 was lower, he eventually no longer hit steam, blocked his tee shot in a bunker 50 meters right of the fairway – and with that every real chance to make a 3 to force a draw.
Scheffler’s 1-up victory kept the slim hope of the US alive to deduct a historical comeback, because his three teammates had already put 2.5 points on the board for him and the eight behind him kept things interesting. While McIlroy and Scheffler finished their match, Ben Crenshaw, who led the Miracle-at-Brookline US team in 1999, looked up from the back of the Green. On Saturday night, he had had a feelingAs he did 26 years ago, that the American team could make it unthinkable on Sunday?
“I have to be honest, I really didn’t do that,” Crenshaw told me. “The margin was so big. But you just never know about Golf. Golf is so inaccurate and they played their hearts today. But Europe played a number of the biggest wave ever. On Saturday it is as if they have every hole Vogeld.”
In the light of firefighting galleries, McIlroy made or contributed to 10 of those Birdies, which would help him position his team to achieve something that said: “Everyone thought it was virtually impossible to do not win alone in America, but win here in New York.”
As McIlroy and his Companion Stella Artois-Guzzling teammates addressed the media on Sunday evening in a tent next to one of the Putting Greens of the Black Course, an intruder without a letters of faith tried to make its way to the press conference. He wore a straw hat and a polo with long sleeves waved with the American flag. “This is the course of the people!” He cried, in the conviction that the Muni status of Bethpage should grant him appetizer. He was quickly ushered in, but for McIlroy the interruption served as a suitable book aid for his wild week.
Shortly after the unwanted guest had left, McIlroy was asked for another spot of clumsiness: the moment, in his Saturday four-ball match, when he answered an F-You Heckle on the 16th hole by stopping his approach shot into three feet. How satisfactory that was, a reporter asked.
McIlroy did not miss a beat.
He leaned in his microphone and said, “Very satisfactory.”
