Adam Wharton: Chelsea lead race but United remain in contention due to two key issues – Man United news and transfer news | The People’s Person

Manchester United will look to strengthen their engine room in 2026, but turning that ambition into reality will be much easier said than done.

Several midfielders have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and one name that continues to surface is Adam Wharton.

Wharton is widely regarded as a deep-lying playmaker or ‘controller’ comparisons drawn to Michael Carrick.

Like the United legend, the Crystal Palace man possesses excellent passing range, composure in possession, positional intelligence and the ability to dictate tempo from the base of midfield.

Some believe he is exactly what a Ruben Amorim midfielder could thrive on, and few would dispute that assessment.

While this is a deal that United should complete in the new year, it is unlikely to be a smooth ride.

For starters, Palace are determined not to lose him and are reportedly keen to tie him down to a new contract.

Then there’s the small matter of competition; virtually every top club in England would circle around it.

Chelsea led the Wharton race

Speaking of clubs that have Wharton in their sights, a new update from Spain has added fuel to the fire.

According to Transfers:

“Adam Wharton has emerged as one of the top transfer targets, and Chelsea are leading the race to sign him.

“Chelsea have already identified Wharton as a medium-term priority and are managing his signing, while keeping a close eye on the strong competition that lies in wait for the talented midfielder.”

United are still firmly in the mix

Although Chelsea’s priority for the Wharton attack appears to be hurting United’s hopes, the Red Devils remain firmly in the race.

Even if the Blues are willing to spend big, they face their own hurdles.

“[The Blues] if they want to secure Adam Wharton, they face a double task: first negotiate with Crystal Palace for a fee that meets the London club’s expectations; Secondly, structure their squad to make room for the midfielder without disrupting the dressing room,” Fichajes added.

United, on the other hand, could benefit if Chelsea’s interest forces Palace to name a price.

Still, they hope that the West Londoners struggle to create space in their already overloaded midfield.

Given how full the world champions’ engine room is, INEOS will also hope a move to Stamford Bridge does not tempt Wharton.

If United can find a way to raise the necessary funds, they should be prepared to take on any rival in the race for Wharton.

Their midfield may have found some stability of late, but it still needs to be strengthened, and what better way to do that than by bringing in the next Michael Carrick? Wharton could take them to the next level.
