For a job or passion cultivated online, social networks are essential to make yourself known, but the best known pose several obstacles: each platform needs its own profile. You can’t use one and follow someone in another. Algorithms tend to suggest content based on sponsors or interactions, and aren’t always guaranteed to find something of real interest. All of this can become problematic, especially for those running a medium to small site. This talk proposes to explore the alternative to commercial platforms, it’s called Fediverse and it’s literally a world that WordPress is part of. All you need is an account and you can interact with all platforms that are part of the ecosystem. Fediverso, in English Fediverse. Federal universe. A philosophy similar to that of email or mobile phones, where we communicate with everyone, regardless of who gives us the address and number. What about social networks? Why does it seem normal to us to have a thousand profiles for a thousand services, while that is not normal at all? Now imagine that you use short messages like Twitter every day, but your favorite creator publishes videos, photos or podcasts. Or has a WordPress blog. We will discuss what advantages and disadvantages participation in the federated network can bring, how to get the most out of the connection between WordPress and Activitypub, a standard W3C communication protocol that has become an easy to install and use plugin. A few clicks and our site is literally connected to the world and can also be commented on by those who come from a video and photo sharing platform. Everything else is real life: no automatic systems, because in the Fediverse the creation of a good network is based on one’s skills in word of mouth, in dealing with interesting content, in using tags that will become public #hashtags.
