ABC received 6 complaints about a parody book: “Hello God, I would like my period now.”
The ABC Ombudsman office has been deleted Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee After 6 complaints that the content was offensive and sexist.
In an episode of 23 episode it was asked to choose from four books written by Guy Montgomery.
Every book was a parody of a popular novel of genre and written in the style of a classic ‘Choose your own adventure’.
The book “Hello God, I would like my period now” was a parody of the Judy Bloom -Roman from 1970 “Are you there God? It is me, Margaret” about a young girl who confronts early adolescent fears, such as menstrual, puberty, bras and boys. The parody plays on these tropics, including getting your menstruation and not having access to products.
The ABC guidelines for damage and violation acknowledge that “community standards are the starting point to determine whether content will probably cause damage or violation. Although it may seem like common sense to keep the prevailing social attitude in mind, it is worthwhile to notice that they are both changeable and not universally detained”.
ABC Ombudsman Fiona Cameron recognized while menstruation is still taboo in some sections of the community and that jokes may not be to everyone’s taste over periods, the stigma is associated with menstruation is “evolving and menstruation is not off-limits as a subject for comedy.”
“After I considered the content and the extent to which it would probably insult the target group of the program, we are satisfied that the content is editorial in a comic parody of the popular novel ‘Are you there god its me margaret’ and the literary genre of ‘Choose your own adventure’, the Ombudsman said.
“We also note that the host tells himself in his humor, a joke about the concept of men of menstrual period (host:” That’s how it works well? “) And we don’t believe that the host makes a joke at the expense of women. We are convinced that it is not a stereotypical or discriminatory content that can reasonably be interpreted as a comprehension.
The program did not violate the editorial standards of the ABC for damage and offense.
