According to him, the South African big name hosting India is the team to beat South AfricaNew Zealand and England as semi-finalists. The biggest surprise was that he ruled out Australia, the 2021 T20 World Cup champions, despite having a strong team and an even stronger resume at the ICC tournaments.
The Men in Blue, led by Suryakumar Yadavare in sublime form, with their ultra-aggressive hitting style. They have lost just four of their last 24 completed outings, indicating their dominance in the shortest format. Their side also features both the world’s No. 1 batsman and bowler in T20I cricket in Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy.
England, meanwhile, recently recorded a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, the co-hosts of the upcoming tournament. New Zealand, on the other hand, lost the T20I series against India 1-4.
AB de Villiers believes the home crowd will increase the pressure on India
While he believes India are the clear favorites to win the tournament, the wicketkeeper said playing in front of a home crowd will put a little extra pressure on Suryakumar Yadav’s side.
“They already have incredible depth and most of the players seem to be in good form now. It looks really good for them. But with that comes the added pressure because there is more expectation from the fans and the crowd. It adds to that pressure that they are going to play at home,” said De Villiers.
India will kick off its campaign against the US on February 7 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
