Yankees Slugger Aaron Judge called Thursday’s 9-3 victory over the Tigers a “surrealistic day” between meeting President Donald Trump before the match and commemorating the 24-year anniversary of the attacks of 11 September.
Trump was in New York to honor the birthday of the attacks and stopped by the Yankees clubhouse prior to the game, shake the players with the players and even shared a moment with Judge. The Yankee Superstar said he had never met a sitting president before Thursday, while noticing the importance of the day and the need to come together.
“Regardless of your beliefs, I think that exactly today, 9/11, the power and resilience that New York City showed during one of the darkest hours, darkest times, it’s just an important day for all of us to come together,” Judge said. “It’s just a kind of surreal moment, surreal day, and for us to come up with a big win, especially the last two losses we had, it was just a great day with a whole round.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone described meeting with President Trump as a “cool experience,” and admitted that it was a “small intimidating.”
“You are a bit nervous, but he is great in that area, really handsome,” said Boone. “I took some photos, shook hands and then I walked him in the main area where the players were, and they were allowed to greet him. It was a real, really cool interaction.”
Video from the clubhouse showed the president that the players appealed moments before they took the field. Trump told the Yankees players that the team would ‘make’ [playoffs]”And that they would” go all the way. ”
The president then started shaking the hands of the players and shared remarkable moments with a distressed Yankee Anthony Volpe and judge.
“You have so much muscle, you have to hit the ball perfectly,” Trump joked to judge. “You are a fantastic player. … You are an incredible player.”
Judge continued by beating a few home runs in the Blowout victory, including a crushing explosion in the left field chairs in the bottom of the first inning that the Yankees gave an early 1-0 lead.
His second home run of the game came in the third inning, when he hit his 361st career Homer to bind Joe Dimaggio on the Home Run list of Yankees of all time.
“I think we should have it more often when we go outside and score so many runs,” Judge joked about the presence of Trump.
