Officials of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) arrived in Ahmedabad, where the London Air India flight crashed on June 12, killing 241 people from 242 on board.
The AAIB, a division under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is responsible for investigating aircraft accidents in India. On Thursday, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed that a formal investigation started into the crash of Air India Flight AI-171.
“After the tragic incident in Ahmedabad, a formal investigation was started by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in accordance with international protocols established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” Naidu posted on X.
The Boeing 787-8, Air India Flight 171 from Ahmedabad to London, crashed on a building of a Resident Doctors’ Hostels shortly after taking Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
In the meantime, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), based in the US, is preparing a federal agency that investigates research into civil aviation, to send a team of researchers to India to help with the current probe to the deadly crash.
At the same time, the Indian government has formed a high -level multidisciplinary committee to investigate the causes of the crash and recommend preventive measures.
“The Commission will investigate the existing standard operational procedures (SOPs) and guidelines that have been issued to prevent and to act and propose extensive guidelines for dealing with such authorities in the future,” explained an order issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
“The committee will not be a replacement for other studies conducted by relevant organizations, but will focus on formulating SOPs for preventing and processing such events in the future,” the order explained.
According to the ministry, the committee has access to all relevant records, including flight data, speech recordings of cockpit, maintenance logs for aircraft, air traffic control records and witness statements. The panel is expected to submit its report within three months.
The committee is chaired by the home secretary of the Union and includes representatives of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force and Aviation Experts. It also noted that it will formulate an extensive SOP and suggest the roles of all agencies and organizations of the central and national governments to treat handling and management after the crash.
According to the order, the Commission will consist of the Minister of the Interior; the secretary or joint secretary of the Ministry of the Interior; the secretary of civil aviation; a representative of the home department of Gujarat; a representative of the state disaster response authority; the police commissioner of Ahmedabad; the director -General (DG) of inspection and safety of the Indian Air Force; the DG of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security; the DG of the Luchtvaartrelaar – the Directorate General of Burgerluchtvaart; the special director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB); And the director of the Directorate of Forensic Science Services.
The order stated that the Commission can also consist of another member as is considered suitable by the Commission; Avoids experts, researchers of accidents and legal advisers can also be admitted by the committee.
