A year ago the Swedish table tennis achieved something that had escaped them for decades. In one of the most dramatic semi-finals in Olympic history, the Men’s team of Sweden was surprised as a second placed Japan 3-2 to reach the gold medal match, so that their very first medal in the team event was ever secured.

The match had everything – early setbacks, heroic comebacks and a decisive rubber that will be remembered for generations. Japan, the second seeds, seemed to cruise to the final when they took an impressive 2-0 lead because of their double pair and the victory of Tomokazu Harimoto over Triels Moregard.

But Sweden, who had already exceeded all expectations during the tournament, refused to surrender. Kristian Karlsson withdrew one with a crucial 3-1 victory over Shunsuke Togami, which reduces the lead of Japan to 2-1 and life in Swedish hope was reduced.

The Momentum continued to shift when Triels Moregard performed when his team needed him the most, defeating Hiroto Shinozuka 3-1 to level the match on 2-2 and to force a decisive rubber.

Enter Anton Kallberg. Faced with the pressure of a decisive rubber against the Japanese Tomokazu Harimoto, the Swedish star was 2-0 down and stared elimination in the face. What followed was a version that embodied the essence of the Olympic competition.

Kallberg produced one of the biggest comebacks in the Olympic table tennis history and won three consecutive games to beat Harimoto and to seal a historic 3-2 victory for Sweden. The moment he won the last point, the Swedish table tennis history was rewritten.

During the tournament, the Swedish team had shown a remarkable resilience and team spirit. Under the leadership of Singles silver medal winner Triels Moregard and supported by the experienced Kristian Karlsson and the coupling Anton Kallberg, they had consistently beat their weight.

More than just a competition

This victory represented something in -depth for Swedish table tennis. For decades, Sweden beat the door of the success of Olympic team without being able to break through. Individual medals had come and gone, but Team Glory had remained elusive.

The 3-2 victory over Japan not only guaranteed the very first team medal in Sweden-it announced them as a real power in world table tennis. The team that many had written off before the tournament reached the Olympic final, with gold now only one match.

With their place in the last secure, Sweden waited for their opponents – or China or France. Regardless of who they would be confronted with, they had already reached the impossible by reaching the gold medal match.

The scenes of celebration in South Paris Arena 4 told the story better than all the words could. Swedish dreams had become Swedish reality and the history of the Table Tennis was made.

Looking back a year later, August 7, 2024 is the day that Swedish table tennis reached new heights. The comeback of Anton Kallberg, Triels Moregard’s Brilliance, Kristian Karlsson’s crucial victory – each played their role in victory.

Sometimes Olympic moments remind us why we fall in love with competition in the first place. This was one of those moments – when dreams come true, and when the sports history of a country is changed forever.

The very first team final in Sweden was waiting for. History was already written.
