A new and improved code processing experience

A new and improved code processing experience

WordPress.com has just made coding of your WordPress manager more powerful and more pleasant. Whether you are a daily user or a developer, you have access to modern functions such as syntax marking, autocomplete and search and replace when you reach the code editor.

Launched in the past week, we bring improved code -editors to two aspects of the WordPress.com -experience:

  • Post and Site code -editors
  • Extra CSS -Input compartment

Let’s dive into what this upgraded experience looks like.

Adjust the block code in the message and site -editors

Do you ever have the Code -editor From the block or site editor and a mass block of almost illegible text presented without marking syntax?

You probably want something that is a little more refined. Maybe even something that would help you type faster, easily spot errors, or just make the code easier to read.

So far it did not exist unless you have installed an adjusted or external plug-in to process it.

Welcome to a new improved experience – now available for everyone:

As you can see when comparing this screenshot with the previous one, the code is much more readable.

Beautiful CSS in Extra CSS -Codeboxes

Writing adapted CSS has also become a lot better. The message and the site editors were a welcome improvement, but you have the chance to touch code earlier when writing custom CSS under the Style Panel in the site editor.

In the past you would see something like the following when adding code in the Extra CSS box under the Style panel:

Extra CSS box.

Now – just like the postal and site code -editors – you can see your CSS in all its glory, just as it was meant:

Which functions are included?

Some functions included in the new code -editors are:

  • Emphasize syntax: View your code colored according to the language, making it much easier to understand the structure at a glance and even write your own code.
  • Autocomplete: Save key attacks, prevent errors and acceleration of your workflow with a simple autocomplete function.
  • Intelligent layout: Enjoy functions such as line numbers, car-in-jumping and bracket couples for a smoother experience.
  • Language support: The new editors detect and mark both HTML and CSS – no more “normal text” subjects for your code!

Oh, and there is also search and replacement support. When viewing a Code -Editor `Command + F` on Mac or ‘Ctrl + F` on Windows to pick up/replace the panel at the bottom of the editor:

Example of using shortcut keys to search/replace code.

The search/replacement function contains matching by:

  • Case (exact match of capital letters and lowercase letters)
  • Regular expressions
  • Word

You can also replace individual events of found competitions or all in one go.

What will come in the future?

With syntax height, autocomplete and other standard code processing functions, WordPress.com bridges the gap between a base CMS and a powerful code friendly platform. This is a step forward for developers, power users and everyone who occasionally has to tinker with code – without ever leaving the editor.

But this is just a first iteration of improved code processing on the platform. So I will leave the question to you: how would you find it to see code processing evolve over time to make your experience more empowerment?

Personally, I would like to see the new functions that have been applied to the code and HTML blocks. Maybe I am even lucky to convince the team to implement one or both.

Anyway, the future is exciting, whether you would like to occasionally tinker with code or dive into it every day. For now, try the new editors and let us know what you think!
