Based on the Dunk and egg fantasy novellas by George RR Martin, A knight of the seven kingdoms takes place 70 years later House of the Dragon and a century earlier Game of Thrones. The series follows the heroic adventures of the courageous hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his intelligent young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who is training to become a knight, as they travel through Westeros.

“The difference between this show and House of the Dragon And Game of Thrones Don’t you go from Winterfell to The Wall, or see what happens in King’s Landing and then Essos,” Claffey, who plays Dunk, said Term. “It’s you the whole time with Dunk following his journey. That probably added to the anxiety of the whole thing, when you realize how much you’re going to be in front of the camera and have to bear.”

In addition to leads Claffey and Ansell, the freshman drama also features Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen, Daniel Ings as Lyonel Baratheon, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle the Tall and Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen.

After the premiere of episode 1, the series has a critic score of 88% and a viewer score of 80% Rotten Tomatoes. NPR critic Glen Weldon called the spinoff a “small, grounded story that you can watch without a wiki open on your phone,” adding that it is “much lighter, faster, and breezier than the shows that came before it.”

The shorter episode count (six episodes) was beneficial to showrunner Ira Parker, who narrated it The Hollywood Reporter it was ideal for the type of story they wanted to tell.

“The biggest thing that was really helpful was learning that the show didn’t have to be ten episodes, an hour each. The fact that we could do six episodes, somewhere between 30 and 40 minutes, was perfect for us,” Parker explained, adding that it meant they “didn’t have to stretch the story.”

Parker continued: “It meant that we could make a faithful adaptation of this – which is obviously very much what George wanted, and what I was very keen to deliver, because I’m a huge fan of these novellas. This way the things we’ve added don’t feel tangential. It feels like these novellas are fleshed out in a way that hopefully George would have done if he’d just written them as novels rather than as 80-page nuggets.”
