In October the world of volleyball gathered for the very first in Katowice, Poland, Special Olympics Unified Volleyball World Cup. From 5-8 October 2025, Spodek Arena Athletes from all over the world will organize in a competition that is celebrating skill and inclusion.
Unified Volleyball World Cup
For Special Olympics Slovakia‘S Šimon Jakuš, the World Cup represents the joy of participating and being part of a supporting community:
“My biggest achievement is just able to exercise and be part of the special Olympic Games Slovakia.”
Volley-ball is a fast team sport that requires agility, coordination, communication and strategy. This tournament has a format that is unique for Special Olympics – Unified Sports. This means that each team consists of six athletes with intellectual handicap and six uniform partners – athletes without intellectual disabilities. Together they accept the court as equals, which shows that sport can transcend boundaries.
Spotlight on Europe: Eight Special Olympics Europe Eurasa Titters to watch
This inaugural edition brings 16 teams together – eight women’s teams and eight men/mixed – they will compete through group game, play -offs and finals, promising passion, teamwork and unforgettable meetings.

Whether it is to practice or dream in local gyms to be on stage in Katowice, these athletes show that victories are just as much measured in human connection as in scored points.
For Special Olympics Finland’s Mika Ahonen, the expectation was built:
“I am really looking forward to traveling to Poland in the World Cup. The opponents will be strong, and we have to do our best to fight for victories. I will really enjoy standing at new teams- it will be an exciting time in Poland and a chance to gain new experiences.”
Beyond the Court: Wellness and Community
The Unified Volleyball World Cup goes beyond the competition – it is a week of sport, community and learning. Fans and attendees can look forward to:

- Healthy athletes Program, offering free screenings and sources, including podiastry checks via fit feet, vision tests with opening eyes and mental wellness support through strong spirits.
- Young athletes Program, which introduces children aged 2-7 and their care providers to exercise through playful activities.
- Fit5 Initiative on October 6, promoting a healthy lifestyle: encouraging exercise five days a week, five portions of vegetables and vegetables daily and five bottles of water.
A city steeped in volleyball tradition
Poland is no stranger to volleyball glory. Katowice, with his passionate fan culture and deep ties with the sport, and spodek Arena – a location that has organized world championships – makes the perfect host. For Special Olympics Poland, 2025 is especially useful: it marks the 40th anniversary of the program, making this world cup both a global competition and a national celebration.
Beyond the Net: A message to the world
While Mariha Kostić reminds us of Special Olympic Games, the lessons of sport think beyond winning medals:
“You have to stay completely focused until the end. There will always be time for parties later, but during the game concentration and teamwork come first.”
The Unified Volleyball World Cup will reveal what is possible when athletes of all skills play side by side, challenge stereotypes and build sustainable friendships.
