Join our workshop on A gentle introduction to mathematical simulation in R, which is part of our Workshops for Ukraine series!
Here’s some more information:
Title:A gentle introduction to mathematical simulation in R
Date: Thursday December 11, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM CET (time zone Rome, Berlin, Paris)
Speaker: Damie Pak has a PhD in biology from Pennsylvania State University, and her research concerns theoretical ecology with a predilection for agricultural insects and infectious diseases. She uses R for everything: from statistical analyzes to mathematical models.
Description: Although R is best known as a tool for statistical analysis, it can also be used for mathematical simulations. Specifically, we can use compartmental modeling – a mathematical framework for capturing individuals transitioning between different phases – to investigate dynamics in nature. In particular, we will use the package {deSolve} to model the Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model to demonstrate the diversity of dynamics that can be observed from a remarkably simple system of equations. The workshop will cover basic math, the structure of writing a differential equation model in R, as well as ways to visualize the output for better understanding using {ggplot} and {gganimate}.
Minimum registration fee: 20 euros (or 20 USD or 800 UAH)
Please note that registration confirmation will be sent to all registered participants 1 day before the workshop and not immediately after registration
How can I register?
- Save your donation receipt (after the donation has been processed, there is an option to enter your email address on the website to which the donation receipt is sent)
- Fill the registration formwhere you attach a screenshot of a donation receipt (attach the screenshot of the donation receipt emailed to you instead of the page you see after the donation).
If you are not interested in attending, you can also contribute by sponsoring a student’s participation, who can then participate for free. If you choose to sponsor a student, all proceeds also go directly to organizations working in Ukraine. You can sponsor a specific student or you can leave it up to us so that we can allocate the sponsored spot to students who have signed up for the waiting list.
How can I sponsor a student?
- Save your donation receipt (after the donation has been processed, there is an option to enter your email address on the website to which the donation receipt is sent)
- Fill the sponsorship formattaching the screenshot of the donation receipt (attach the screenshot of the donation receipt emailed to you instead of the page you see after the donation). You can indicate whether you want to sponsor a specific student or we can allocate this place ourselves to the students on the waiting list. You can also indicate whether you would prefer that we give priority to students from developing countries when allocating the place(s) you sponsor.
If you are a university student and cannot afford the registration fee, you can also sign up for the waiting list here. (Please note that joining the waitlist does not guarantee participation).
You can also find more information about this workshop series, a schedule of our future workshops, and a list of our past workshops, recordings and materials of which you can obtain. here.
I look forward to seeing you during the workshop!
