Discover a new collaborative project that brings kinetic typography and cavalry animations to the browser. A minimalist approach to motion design tools.
Cavalry is the new cool kid among animation software. To demonstrate how it can be used to build creative tools for brands, Algo built a new demo: a free web app (typeflow.tools) that allows you to type text, choose a color palette and create typographic animations completely free. The project is a collaborative effort, featuring type animation templates from some of Algo’s favorite Cavalry artists.
What is cavalry?
Cavalry is a popular animation software that is sparking a wave of procedural animation, putting forward an aesthetic that merges graphic design, typography, and creative coding, all within a no-code animation interface that ultimately challenges the status quo of After Effects.
Something + Cavalry
The Algo team has always been fascinated by Cavalry since its initial release and has been experimenting with it for years on customer projects such as Elastic or Ondo. But when the Cavalry Team announced the upcoming release of a Web Player, the Algo team decided it was time to give it a spin.
What is Typeflow?
Typeflow is a free online tool created by the Algo team to demonstrate how Cavalry can be used to build branded creative tools for their clients.
Cavalry, now available in Algo
With the launch of this demo, Cavalry is now available as an engine for Algo’s video automation projects (in addition to After Effects & Lottie). It can be used to power branded creative tools for their clients, motion systems and packaged campaigns with a unique video for each user.
A joint demo
Formerly Algo demos always had animation templates created exclusively by their team, but this time they wanted to do something different: collaborate with the Cavalry community. The idea was to have one scene created by each of their favorite cavalry performers.
Meet the artists
“We selected the scenes that could be most interestingly converted into artistic animation templates,” says Luca Gonnelli, Creative Director at Algo. The artists include ShoobAKA, Antonin.werk, Matteo Campostrini, Mario De Meijer (plus one scene from the same Luca Gonelli).
Open files available on Scenery
Most of these scenes can be downloaded by anyone for free Landscapean incredible community of cavalry artists sharing their open files and helping each other by learning all the tools and techniques of this software.
The technology behind it
Over the past few months, Algo’s R&D team has been building a serverless, hyper-scalable cloud infrastructure based on Linux that can transform Cavalry projects into millions of videos, across hundreds of parallel instances. The live preview in the browser runs on the Cavalry WebPlayer: a new beta feature that plays Cavalry files directly on the web page. This is the first project in the world to go live with this.
Cavalry introduces the Web Player
“We are very excited to announce the Cavalry Web Player. It is now possible to create custom, fully customizable animations that can be viewed and exported from modern web browsers and with native support for Cavalry’s extensive features.
Designers and animators can now work unhindered by the limitations of formats like Lottie. This will transform the review and iteration process and means non-technical teams can create and deliver design systems to their customers in a lightweight, easy-to-use format.
This is truly a game-changer for collaborative workflows and we are thrilled that the great team at Algo has made Cavalry a key part of their workflow and started using the Cavalry Web Player in such innovative ways.” says Chris Hardcastle, CEO of Cavalry.
