The Philadelphia 76ers are off to a good start this season. That makes it a bit unreasonable to even talk about trading guys right now, but given the way things are going in the NBA, front offices are always looking at who could be available to take, as well as who they want to dangle from their respective ball clubs.
For the 76ers, both missions play a role. The team will always have a way to get players from outside who fit better into certain roles. That said, the other part of the equation also rings a bell for the team, as Philly also has some players who could be much better off playing elsewhere. An example? Look no further than Eric Gordon.
Now, Gordon is currently eligible to be traded, but even if the 76ers try to trade him, it probably won’t happen now. The unofficial trade season hasn’t started yet and a large portion of the players are still not eligible to be traded, but once they are, the front office will have every incentive to try to send him elsewhere.
The 76ers should trade Eric Gordon ASAP
Until now, Eric Gordon has been an afterthought in Nick Nurse’s rotation. That’s far from surprising, though, as the veteran was signed largely to provide emergency shooting and an additional presence in the locker room.
But with the 76ers shooting lights out from three-point range to start their campaign, Gordon wasn’t needed. But in reality, even if the team starts to decline, it has very little need for what Gordon brings to the table.
Furthermore, the locker room presence he will need to bring to this team is already being filled by a very capable old voice in the form of Kyle Lowry, who has already been a quasi-assistant coach for the team this season.
With Gordon on a minimum deal, it should be easy to send him to another team, either as part of a trade or as a mere add-on. There are probably still some veteran playoff teams that would love an extra floor spacer, so even at his age, Gordon wouldn’t be a terrible addition.
But for the 76ers, they need to trade the veteran as soon as possible. They have more need for the roster spot he currently occupies, and he doesn’t really bring anything to the table at this point.
