There are many nice and cozy restaurants in Bratislava, whether you want to try traditional Slovak cuisine or something more modern. We have tried a number of restaurants and take you on a tasty tour through the capital of Slovakia.

Restaurants in Bratislava

We recently returned from a very nice and enjoyable press trip in Bratislava. Relatively much attention was paid to food and wine, and our experience was that you can have truly wonderful food and drink experiences in this country.

There are of course many restaurants in Bratislava, in different price ranges and with different orientations. We were able to visit a number of them, and here we recommend seven restaurants in Bratislava, all of which are good in different ways.

1. Work

The first evening in Bratislava we had dinner in a restaurant Worklocated in the newer part of town. This is a stylish and very nicely decorated restaurant, with modern dishes.

There are starters/main courses as well as a tapas concept, and Peter and I chose to share four tapas dishes. Not bad, we might say! This was really good. We opted for halloumi, fried shrimp with sweet and sour sauce and banana sauce (!), croquettes with potatoes and cheese and chicken skewers with peanut sauce. Yum!

2nd cylinder

The next day there was lunch at a restaurant called cylinderand which is located in the central old town. Here the emphasis is on traditional dishes that can be traced back to the powerful Austria-Hungary, of which Slovakia was once part.

I chose to try the traditional dish bryndza gnocchiwhich consists of small potato dumplings mixed with the creamy sheep’s cheese bryndza and topped with some crispy pork. Mighty, but good!

Peter chose a spicy soup with lentils, chickpeas and Hungarian sausage, which he really liked. Because we know that the traditional dishes in this part of Europe can be hearty, he chose to combine the soup with a starter instead of a main course. Sheep cheese with beetroot is not bad!

3. Leberfinger

One evening we had dinner in a restaurant Leberfingera cozy and pleasant restaurant right on the Danube River.

Here the whole group ordered bread together spreadsi.e. various spreadable junk, as a starter. The most traditional mess is bryndza, fresh Slovak sheep’s cheese, which is very tasty. At this restaurant we also got a mess that I think contained lard and pork.

As a main course I chose bacon-wrapped pork fillet with mushroom sauce and Peter opted for deer medallions with blueberry sauce. Very good!

4. Pulitzer

We had one of the best lunches of the entire trip at a restaurant Pulitzerwhich is centrally located in the old city.

I chose chicken with sweet potato and saffron sauce. Peter opted for sous vide pork fillet with potatoes, Brussels sprouts and mushroom sauce. Everything was very good and well prepared.

For dessert we chose an apple strudel served with strawberries, and when we asked for it, we also got an ice cream… A perfect ending!

5. Brasserie La Marine

One of the evenings in Bratislava we went to the opera and tonight we had to eat early. Peter chose to eat two starters here: a toast with foie gras followed by grilled shrimp. I opted for a vegetarian pancake filled with goat cheese, arugula and saffron-garlic mayonnaise. Not so stupid!

Peter also tried a cheesecake for dessert, which was unexpectedly dark in color, but very tasty.

6. Michalska

One of the evenings in Bratislava we ate at Michalská restaurant, which serves traditional Slovak dishes that almost feel like home cooking. Since we had eaten a late and heavy lunch this day, the whole party chose to share a large plate, filled with various local dishes. Since we also tasted wines all day, I opted to order a local non-alcoholic drink in the form of kofola. A bit like Coca-Cola, but a little less sweet.

The large plate contained small meat pies, small steamed pierogi with vegetarian filling, the dish bryndza gnocchi and local sausage. This restaurant is an excellent choice if you want to try local, rural cuisine and taste dishes with a home-cooked atmosphere.

7. Pivnica u Zlata Husi (Slovak Grob)

The seventh and last restaurant we recommend is located just outside Bratislava, in the small village of Slovenský Grob. The restaurant is called Pivnica u Zlatá Husi and is one of many restaurants in this village entirely focused on big glorious goose dinners.

You can eat goose here all year round, but the main time for goose dinners is in the fall, from September to Christmas. Our table was beautifully set and we were just one of many groups who came here to enjoy a goose feast.

During the warmer seasons you can sit outside in the cozy garden.

The goose dinner was an experience, we promise, and it was hearty. The party started with two starters: first a broth soup with noodles and vegetables and then foie gras.

The main course – goose – was delicious served on large plates together with thin potato pancakes and red cabbage. The goose meat was wonderfully tender and tasty, and the pancakes were a surprisingly good topping.

For dessert we got a pastry with a filling of walnuts or poppy seeds. Very tasty, although Peter and I were so full by now that we could only share a piece… Anyway, this meal was an experience that we can highly recommend!

More restaurants in Bratislava?

There are of course many more good restaurants in Bratislava, although we didn’t have time to try any more. Don’t miss tasting the local pastries poppy seed rolls (poppy croissants) or walnut rolls (walnut croissants). You can find these goodies, for example, at Pressburg bagel in the old town.

More to see and do in Bratislava

What else can you see and do in Bratislava? There are several exciting art museums and also interesting historical places. If you like food and drinks, we can also recommend trying wine at Salonfin or participate in a wine safari in Svätý Jur.
