If you have not yet planned a weekend watch party for this week’s Wyndham championship, well, we are not the fault here. Other things happen. The last major of the year takes place in the AIG Women’s Open at Porthcawl, while the men’s game is still in the uncomfortable break between the end of the Majors and the start of the play -offs. Maybe you have planned to mow your lawn. See some friends. Play your own wave of yourself.
But although there are always interesting subplots for the regular season finale of this PGA Tour, this year it seems to be even more than normal this year. With fewer Playoff spots available, more money on the line, Ryder Cup spots in the balance plus job security and more at stake, almost everyone in the field has something extra to play for.
Here are five of those most intriguing things:
1. Money, money, money
If you glazes at the mere mention of more millions for picking up in Hergolf, all good. I get it. Sit to the next list sign. But in addition to the wallet of the Wyndham of $ 8.2 million, there are several seasonal hose bonuses that mean one lot From cash for picking up.
First, there is the Comcast Business Tour Top 10, which expands $ 40 million to the top 10 of the regular season as follows:
Comcast Business Tour Top 10 Bonus
1st – $ 8 mil
2nd – $ 6m
3rd – $ 4.8 million
4th – $ 4.4 million
5th – $ 4m
6th – $ 3.4 million
7th – $ 2.8 million
8th – $ 2.4 million
9th – $ 2.2 million
10th – $ 2m
But get this: there is Also The First FedEx Cup bonus benefit now that they spread love over three different payouts. Ignoring the fact that it is hilarious to have two different prizes for regular season that at the same time distribute and use enormously different payment structures, this is how that looks like:
FedEx Cup Regular season benefit
1st – $ 10m
2nd – $ 4m
3rd – $ 1.2 million
4th – $ 1 million
5th – $ 800k
6th – $ 700K
7th – $ 650k
8th – $ 600K
9th – $ 550k
10th – $ 500K
The bad news, in terms of entertainment, is that the top two places are already locked up. Congratulations, Scottie SchefflerAt the age of $ 18 mil ($ 8 million from Comcast, $ 10 million from Fedex). Congratulations, Rory McilroyAt $ 10 mil of your own ($ 6 million and $ 4 million). They get that sweet, sweet direct deposit without set foot near Greensboro, NC – and they have more bonus money on the way. But after them, things become a bit more interesting.
Ben Griffin (No. 7 in the FedEx Cup), Keegan Bradley (No. 10), Andrew Novak (No. 12) and Robert Macintyre (No. 15) could all go up meaningfully with a top finish. If Griffin won, he would improve his bonus benefit by, for example, more than $ 2.5 million, for example, the $ 1.48 million winner plus. Captain Keegan must be currently projected $ 2.5 million in bonus money (or improve).
And then there are the boys who try to sneak in from outside the top 10, including the seductive opportunity that Novak could win this week, catch Bradley in the ranking of Ryder Cup and catch his $ 2.5 mil while fighting for a captain’s pick. ((Bob Macintyre Could also escape Bradley and start Ryder Cup voltages early.)
2. Play -off spots
I know it is difficult to keep track of, so let’s judge: 70 players now make the FedEx Cup play -offs. Then 50 make the BMW championship on the second round and 30 make the big Tour championship final.
So this week we bubbled the Bubble Boys. Big-Timers Tony -Arguments (No. 60) and Rickie Fowler (No. 61) are almost certainly safe for the top 70, but here is how things look behind them:
62 – Davis Riley, 651.7 FedEx Cup – points
63 – Kevin Yu, 644.3
64 – Erik van Rooyen, 634.4
65 – Nico Echavarria, 628.5
66 – Emiliano Grillo, 627.6
67 – Cam Davis, 616.3
68 – Patrick Rodgers, 615.6
69 – Ben An, 595.4
70 – Matti Schmid, 594.6
–
71 – Nicolai Hojgaard, 590.4
72 – Keith Mitchell, 589.3
73 – Chris Kirk, 582
74 – Christiaan Bezuidenhout, 575.1
75 – Gary Woodland, 562.1
76 – Kevin Roy, 555.8
77 – Alex Smalley, 553.8
78 – Davis Thompson, 551.6
79 – Eric Cole, 546.2
80 – William Mouw, 526.7
Those are some slender but meaningful margins; Top 70 will be able to sail carefree in full status for the 2026 season (okay, they will still sweat from the Top 50, etc., but you get the idea) while all others are left to secure their card this fall. Speaking of that …
3. Job security
This year the Tour cuts its full status cards to 100 instead of 125 (Nos. 101-125 will have a partial status.) That cut will not take place this week-This will be completed at the end of the autumn season of seven events. But if you are outside the top 70, this is your last tour event until mid -September in the ProCore in Napa, California, which means that there is some urgency for a long dismissal. Here is how That Bubble is currently looking, with a remarkable fan favorite at no. 101; I also played in those players who are exempt until 2026.
91 – Danny Walker
92 – Matt Wallace
93 – Garrick Higgo
94 – Taylor Moore
95 – Vince Whaley
96 – Beau Hossler
97 – Billy Horschel*
98 – Mark Hubbard
99 – Max McGreevy
100 – Isaiah Salinda
101 – Joel Dahmen
102 – Lee Hodges
103 – Rico Hoey
104 – Austin Eckroat*
105 – Jesper Svensson
106 – Max Homa*
107 – Victor Perez
108 – Patrick Fishburn
109 – Chan Kim
110 – Alejandro Tosti
4. Ryder Cup Spots (Team USA Edition)
Most Ryder Cup -Sluts do not play this week – we don’t have the Schefflers, Schauffeles or even Spauns and Henleys of the world that pop up. But there is still enough USA intriges team.
Not only do three Americans play in the Ryder Cup -Mix – Griffin, Bradley and Novak are Nos. 9, 10 and 13 in the American ranking – they actually play together The first two rounds, which means an opportunity to audition directly for Bradley. (Bradley’s audition for Bradley is of course the most compelling.)
These guys will of course all be in the play -offs, so this is not a last look. But Griffin and Novak were a bit leveled earlier this season after red -hot stretches; It’s time to see if they can make a movement.
There are other boys who can go on a kind of stove and insert themselves into the conversation – the Lucas Glovers, Cameron Youngs And Sam Stevens of the world. But we will have trained our eyes on those top three for the time being.
5. Ryder Cup Spots (Team Europe Edition)
Because of the way in which European professionals plans their seasons, Ryder Cup Bubble Boys can also become Fedex Cup Bubble Boys. That means that this week there are a few professionals who play to extend their seasons and also extend their audition periods a few weeks longer. Most striking Rasmus Hojgaard (No. 7 in Ryder Cup Ranking, no. 82 in the FedEx Cup), Matt Wallace (No. 11 in Ryder Cup, no. 92 in Fedex Cup) and Nicolai Hojgaard (No. 25 in Ryder Cup, no. 71 in Fedex Cup). Nicolai just needs a solid finish, where Rasmus or Wallace need something special to keep their American seasons going. If not, it is interesting to see if they add some European events, such as the Danish Golf Championship (14-17 August, a logical fit for the Danish twins) or the Betfred British Masters (21-24 August) if they have to miss top 70.
There are also other contenders for the latter European place in the Wyndham field, also a more likely (Matthew Fitzpatrick, Currently no. 13 on the list of Team Europe) and others who need a splash (Thomas Detry, Aaron Rai, Harry Hall).
Because of my maths behind the Napkin, there are nine near-locks for the European team (Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton, Bob Macintyre, Sepp Straka, Viktor HOVOLAND And Shane Lowry). Regarding the last three? There is still some golf left to find out.
It is always a good week to have a good week. This week it is just even better.
