Returning to the NBA design of 2019, when the Pelicans of New Orleans mentioned the name of Zion Williamson with the first general choice, the hype was unreal for the Duke -striking. He was generally considered the most hyped prospect since LeBron James, and many thought he had the potential to become the face of the competition. Zion had the charisma, the smile, the personality, athletics and certainly the skill. Until now, however, injuries and off-Court issues have stopped that agenda.
On the way to this coming season, I really think that Williamson could finally fulfill his destination to be like LeBron, but not necessarily for the reason people think.
During this entire period outside the season, when the name of Williamson is raised, it is attached to Pelican President Joe Dumars. That may not mean much for most, because leaders of front offices usually have close relationships with their stars. That said, I think it is a sign that Williamson will have a say in the decisions that the Front Office makes soon enough.
There is a consistent theme from Pelicans leaders and members of the media who say that Joe Dumars has expressed a strong desire for Williamson to take on a role as a leader. Leadership is perhaps one of the most valuable features of LeBron, and now it is something that Williamson wants to add.
Although Zion may never be the face of the competition, he pulls in Lebron’s footsteps with his connectivity with the front office and goal to become a leader.
Could Zion become Zi-GM?
If you are in the NBA world, you have heard the nickname Le-GM. This nickname was given to LeBron because he was so connected to the Front Office and was a decision maker when it came to hiring, firing, signing and exchanging people. So could Zion Zi-GM become?
I honestly don’t see why not. In just over 3 months, the bond between Williamson and Dumars has grown as both men seem to be extremely close. Dumars even mentioned in an interview that they talk almost every day and that they are extremely close. Such a relationship will only lead to Zion being involved in Front-Office decisions.
It is clear that Dumars still needs control and the one must be with the last word about the transactions of Front Office, but getting Williamson’s opinion about things would not harm anyone. He is the one on the field every evening and sees things that someone from a press box or the sidelines may not see any further. Having his voices would still be a weapon for Dumars.
