5 ways to buy the most expensive phones means doing less

When you spend top dollar on a telephone, you can reasonably expect you to get all the bells and whistles. That is not the case. There is quite a bit now that you will find on a budget or Mid-Range telephone rather than a $ 1200 flagship.

No headphone connection

The removal of the headphone connection is one of that betrayal that has been collected in the memory of those among us who have lived through it, such as the closing of Google Reader. Here was a function that used for every portable electronic device from the Sony Walkman to the Nintendo Game Boy. The possibility to use every old pair of wired headphones or earplugs that you had lying around was just a fact of how handheld gadgets worked with audio.

Nowadays you will not find that port on an iPhone. You won’t find it on a Samsung Galaxy S25 or the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Google Pixel telephones? They don’t have them either.

If you want headphone connection, you must look at budget telephones or niche devices such as the minimum telephone. And that is not all these devices earlier.

The minimum phone is a smartphone with a full version of Android on an e-paper display. The phone also contains a keyboard with 35 buttons, which means that its attraction goes beyond those who want to reduce the telephone addiction and reclaim their focus. It also provides a nice pocket ereader.

4

No expandable storage

A telephone with a microSD card slot is a telephone with a maximum of 2 TB storage. Phones that are used to format this memory as an internal storage, so that apps are stored there such as a Nintendo Switch games. Even if you are not informed, you still have a cheap way to save photos and video for many years.

Flagship telephones no longer offer expandable storage. If you want more physical storage space, that is a charging that you probably cost more hundreds more on top of the hundreds that you are already spending.

3

Recharge

Apple and Samsung are dominant here in the US. Google is supplied in a distant third. All three offer loading speeds that are underwhelming for what you can find in cheaper phones from OnePlus and Motorola. My Galaxy Z explains 6 tops when charging 25 watts, and it takes about an hour to juice my phone. This year’s model is not significantly faster.

My Moto Edge+ 2023 cost a quarter of the sticker price (because I bought both phones open box or second, the delta was much smaller for me), and it could charge in half the time. That is due to 68W charging. You can drop a similar OnePlus telephone on a charger if you enter the shower and have full confidence, you will come through the day you stand out.

2

No physical keyboard options

Most telephones, either flagship or budget, do not have a physical keyboard. But there are niche options that do that. The minimum phone is the most famous example, but if you are not attracted to an e-ink display, the Unihertz Titan 2 Is a better example. Both look like modern the classic Blackberry.

The physical keyboard shows few signs of making a revival. Many of us have adapted quite well to visual keyboards, and a growing number of us grew up with them as our standard test signs. I never thought I would say this, but I am personally preferred a virtual keyboard above a physical and I mean full-sized desktops. But there is something special about the tangible feeling of physical buttons on a phone that would be nice if at least one flagship would present the option without having to resort to accessories such as the Click on keyboard cover.

1

Esim only

This trend has not yet completely taken over, but it is growing. iPhones are only Esim in the US, and from this year Google Pixel phones will start. I am nervous that by the time I am ready to replace my Galaxy Z fold 6, whatever model is available, will also have been followed.

There are certainly advantages for Esim’s, but there are also disadvantages. They create friction when they try to switch between phones, which I often have to do now than most of the telephone reviewer, but which I also like to do for peace of mind. If I release my phone on the ride of the road to my car, I can have the SIM card pop in a spare old phone and be on my feet until my headphones have been determined. Not that simple with Esim.

Does this mean that you are better not to buy a flagship? Not necessary. It rather means that if you want headphone connection, foldable storage or a physical keyboard, you have to do without the most powerful professors and the best cameras. You must accept decisions, regardless of how much you spend. For the near future there is no option to have everything.
