‘A house of dynamite’ (2025)

As is often the case in films directed by Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty”), every decision (and every second) counts in “A House of Dynamite,” a political thriller about a team of government officials dealing with an unidentified missile hurtling towards the US.

We see the action unfold from multiple perspectives, from Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Clarke in the Situation Room to a remote military base overseen by Anthony Ramos to Air Force One, where President Idris Elba is whisked away to a safe location. Although almost everyone responds calmly and competently to a crisis, you are on the edge of your seat.

How to watch: ‘A house of dynamite’ indeed streaming on Netflix.

‘I’m not there’ (2007)

I’m sorry to tell you that I found Bruce Springsteen’s new biopic, “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” to be a bit of a slog. (You can read my full review here , or read a slightly different version from my Springsteen superfan colleague.) Luckily, there are plenty of great music biopics available to watch this weekend, including this 2007 version about the life of Bob Dylan.

The 2024 Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” makes it clear that the man once known as Robert Zimmerman is an enigma who tries on different personas, like a new pair of sunglasses. Todd Haynes’ 2007 experimental, non-linear film makes that quality literal by casting six different actors (including Oscar winners Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, and Christian Bale) to play abstract representations of six different phases of Dylan’s life.

Weapons‘(2025)

One of the best horror films of 2025 is coming to HBO Max after a surprisingly strong hit at the summer box office. The film, directed by Zach Cregger (“Barbarian”), is about a small town in Pennsylvania where seventeen children climb out of their beds and disappear in the middle of the night.

The tragedy defies explanation, leaving the townspeople seeking solace in conspiracy theories and scapegoats – including the children’s teacher, played by Julia Garner, and the only student in her class who didn’t disappear at 2:17 am.

‘Talamasca: the secret order’

Following the success of Anne Rice’s ‘Interview With the Vampire,’ AMC has begun building an entire Rice universe, including this spinoff series about a secret society, The Talamasca, that watches over the witches, demons and vampires that populate the gothic horror author’s works.

The Talamasca first appeared in the second season of “Interview With the Vampire” and draw characters from that series into their world, including Woburn native Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy, the journalist covering the vampire’s activities.

‘No one wants this‘Season 2

With so many horror, thriller and horror-thriller recommendations this week, how about something a little lighter? The hit rom-com series, which returned to Netflix for Season 2 on Thursday, is about a rabbi (Adam Brody, “The OC”) and a non-Jewish podcaster (Kristen Bell, “Veronica Mars”) who start dating despite the skepticism of their families, friends and complete strangers.

Season 1 chronicles the early stages of their relationship, as the duo moved past the tough questions (“Can rabbis have sex”) and into the honeymoon phase. Season 2 raises thornier questions, including marriage, children and… *gulp* religious conversion.

How to watch: Season 2 of ‘Nobody Wants This’ is out streaming on Netflix.
