At least four people were killed and more than 70 others were injured on Wednesday as protests from protesters who demanded the state and the recording of Ladakh under the sixth schedule was violent. Authorities put on a curfew in the city and forbade a meeting of more than five people.
During the arson, the local BJP office was set on fire and a vehicle was set on fire, while demonstrators resorted to arson. The police used Teargas and Baton accused the demonstrators to control the violence.
After the chaos, the Union Administration in Leh Ladakh imposed an evening clock under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, which forbids immediately protests and meetings in LEH.
A meeting of five or more people was forbidden, without procession, rally or mars to be performed without prior written approval in Leh, an official order said.
The agitation, summoned by the youth wing of the Leh Apex (Lab), was part of the current campaign that was looking for the state for Ladakh and inclusion according to the sixth schedule of the constitution.
Ladakh was part of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir and became a trade union area, which came directly under the control of the center, after Article 370 was abolished on 5 August 2019. The people of Ladakh, together with the trade union area of J&K, have since asked the state for the respective UTs.
The call for a closure came after two of the 15 people in a hunger strike, led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, since 10 September have been shifted to a hospital due to deteriorated health.
Wangchuk ended his 15-day fast on Tuesday while he encouraged supporters to prevent violence.
The tension escalated when a group of young people reportedly pelted stones, which gave rise to police action.
Protesters later put a security vehicle outside the BJP office in Leh. Authorities said that extra forces were used to restore order and prevent further unrest.
A new round of conversations between the center and representatives of Ladakh, including members of the Leh Apex Body (Lab) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), is planned for October 6.
However, demonstrators have urged the date to be demanded in view of the long -term hunger strike and growing public concern about the political future of Ladakh.
Wangchuk appealed to his supporters and appealed to calmness. “I request the youth to stop arson and collisions. We end our fasts and I will insist on the administration to stop using tear gas. No hunger strike succeeds if lives are lost in violence,” said the climate activist.
Wangchuk show concern about the last turn of events in Ladakh, said that his message from Vreedzame Pad had failed.
The day-long unrest also led to the cancellation of the final ceremony of the four-day annual Ladakh festival, which had started on Sunday.
The Union Territory Administration announced the decision with reference to ‘inevitable circumstances’, in which he regrets the inconvenience for local artists, cultural groups, tourists and the public.
It is striking that supporters of the state of Ladakh claim that such guarantees are essential to preserve the fragile environment of the region, the unique cultural heritage and the rights of the tribal population.
The Leh Apex body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, which represent various political and social groups, are united in submitting these requirements for the center.
Omar Abdullah spreads on BJP
The protests in Ladakh’s capital Leh came on the day that J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah de Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) attacked the delay in the recovery of the state of the former state and said that it was “unfair” for the people.
In conversation with reporters, Abdullah accused the BJP of postponing and resisting the Restore of the State for Jammu and Kashmir because it lost the elections.
“People participated in the election process. It is the bad luck that they could not win. However, people here cannot be punished. It seems that the state is not provided to people because the BJP has not formed the government. It is unfair towards people.
